Well for almost 4 years I have had this PC. Its been with me through Rouge Spear to Half Life 2. Its been a long journy, a journy that I must admit must some day come to an end. I have already swapped out the CPU, RAM and Video Card must haves for the latest games. But I did that 2 years ago, midway through the PC's life cycle. Here she is:

Betsy
-Intel P4 2.4Ghz 400mhz FSB
-ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
-1024mb RD Rambus RAM PC-800
-80 GB HDD
-250 Watt PSU

Those are the basics of my little machine that could. Now there is a new game coming out; Battlefield 2!!!!! I want to be able to play this game at decent settings. I run DOOM 3 on High 1024x768, and Half Life 2 with all settings other than AA and AF maxed at 1024x768 with decent performance at over 30 FPS. Battlefield 2 however is unknown to me and I want to know if my PC can handle it. Well to be honest I already know that answer: :rolleyes:...................................................... NO!

Well that helps. So with that outta the way I need to know some stuff;

1. Can my PC handle an ATI Radeon x850 XT PE Edition AGP put into it?
-If It can, will it even be worth it?
2. Can my PC handle an Nvidia 6800 GT?
-If it can, will it be worth it?

I am trying to determine if I should buy a top end card or a mid range card. Will my processor hold me back to the point that buying the top end model be not worth it?

3. Should I just breakdown and begin saving my pennies for a new PC?
-(Its a big investment as I am only 16 with no job and have to pay for car+insurance)

Your CPU is a bottle neck right now. Your PC is pretty much coming to the end of it's life.
I would wait till the end of the summer, see what everything's like then Hardware wise, and build a new one.

Is that a 2.4C? That was a good little chip. Too bad Intel doesn't make chips like those anymore.

With your PSU, I would be worried aobut putting a 9800pro in there much less any of those video cards in. Plus your system would drag them down. Like I say the best thing to do would be to wait till the end of the summer see what every's doing and build then.

Your system should run BF2 decently until your next build.
 
well the demo should be out this friday I believe, wait till then and you will see.
 
The 2.4C with an 800Mhz FSB was good.
I had one and I kept it at 3.0 gig and 1,000 FSB the entire time I had it.

Actually, that chip is a 2.4 (plain), based on that "400MHz" FSB.

The full range of 2.4GHz P4's are:

2.4 (plain): Northwood core, 400MHz FSB, 512K cache, no HT
2.4A: Prescott core, 533MHz FSB, 1MB cache, no HT
2.4B: Northwood core, 533MHz FSB, 512K cache, no HT
2.4C: Northwood core, 800MHz FSB, 512K cache, HT

Right on. Its just a regular Pentium 4 2.4GHZ 512k cacnhe with a 400Mhz FSB. Thanks for the advice guys, although a little more wouldn't hurt :)
