To sync or not to sync?

I recently bought a BenQ XL2730Z. I wanted to love it, but the pixel inversion artifacts were unbearable and I returned it. Having read all the BLB/glow/QC issues with the new AHVA 144hz panels, I'm starting to wonder if Freesync/G-sync is something I've really got to have... or should I just skip it for now.

I've been waiting for something perfect to come out, but my patience is waning. I need a new monitor, and I'm considering giving up on the AMD/Nvidia sync tech and just buying an LG 27mb85r for the image quality, low input lag, and minimal ghosting.

Anyone care to share some opinions about the importance of this new technology?

What pixel inversion artifacts were you getting? I've never seen mention of them with the 2730Z and I don't have any on mine.

I absolutely adore gsync bit will admit having no knowledge on how adaptive sync would compare.

I've been using GSYNC since they released the DIY kit. I could never go back. The complete elimination of stuttering and tearing makes an enormous difference.

I also would avoid calling it "adaptive sync" since that term has already been claimed for specific VSYNC implementations where the monitor still has a fixed refresh rate.

Like the screen shots in the review above... but I could see it everywhere in brighter colors. In Unigine Heaven I could see it across the entire screen almost constantly.

The monitor looked like you were watching it through a screen door during moving scenes. Like thin vertical lines across the entire panel. Static images were quite nice for a TN, but I couldn't stand the thin vertical lines I was perceiving in moving scenes.

I tried making various adjustments, using calibration profiles and settings from TFT central, using a different DP cable... drivers, etc. Mine shipped with the V002 firmware too.

Sharknice - Edited to correct that, thank you!

Isn't that LG you're looking at a 60Hz monitor? Honestly I think you're better off with a 144hz monitor because stuttering and tearing are just a lot less noticeable when you've got a high refresh rate monitor but it's still nice to have for some "future proof" I guess. Instead of the BenQ 2730Z maybe you can try your luck with an Asus MG278Q or MG279Q?

Oooh yeah, I do have that. I've only ever noticed it in World of Tanks though, and it didn't bother me much. I could see it on the entire image like a screen-door effect once every few hours. My old VG236HE doesn't do that at 120hz, this is the first high refresh monitor I had that did. I don't think the MG279Q I had before did either, I just couldn't get Freesync to work on it.

I just said skip it. I bought a 1ms TN panel, and will await the victor of OLED versus 144 Hz IPS, and whichever sync technology wins.

But I'm picky about response time, so perhaps you'll be happy with IPS?

The extra high 144hz refresh rate, or Free/G-sync only matters if you hate tearing in games, and hate the judder you get from VSYNC. It really only fixes a corner case.

And for all but the hardest of the hardcore FPS players, 60 Hz with low input lag is fast enough to get decent response time.

I have to admit, that after trying freesync with CF 290X cards, it's better to just get a 144hz monitor and use adaptive vsync. Now it's set up to be v-sync off if the fps is less than half of the refresh rate, and v-sync on if it's more. And I don't notice any stuttering or tearing. I don't feel that I need a G-sync monitor at all, I wouldn't even notice the difference most likely.

With freesync, the monitor started to flicker when the fps dropped to the lower end of the freesync range (sub 50 fps) honestly it was like looking at an old CRT television with 50Hz. The issue was somewhat improved after a driver update for the monitor but still very noticeable, and it drove me nuts.

apples and oranges. you can't get a gaming monitor that looks exactly like that high-end non-gaming monitor. and no one can decide for you if you need the higher gaming performance of 144hz gsync. but I'll tell you that I can't remember any 144hz gsync gamer on a forum saying they'd go back.

How do you set this up?

FWIW I haven't been playing FPS games on PC for several years... I don't know if I ever will again.

I'm more into things like Skyrim, Witcher, Fallout, and various RTS games. Oh, and War Thunder...
