I installed a Samsung 840 series into a customers computer last week. It was fast till one of his existing issues prevailed itself. Now im doing a frankenstein computer for him. As payment he is buying me a Intel 520 Series 240GB SSD.

Im having second thoughts about it now. Right now im running nothing but velociraptors and they seem to do ok but i dunno. Are there any things i should look for or keep in mind as a SSD owner? I was thinking about just selling it for the money but maybe you guys can talk me into keeping it.
 
I'd keep it. If your running windows 7 by default trim will be enabled. Intel sdd's have a 'toolbox' you can download separately to run trim etc. Intel is reliable although they don't make the fastest ssd's it's still worth it. Once your used to the snappy speed you'll never want to go back to a hard drive.

In all honesty, I think an SSD is the single fastest upgrade you can feel on a day to day basis.

I second and third this ^^

I upgraded from a single core AMD 3000+ w/ 1GB ram to a C2Q6600 w/ 4GB ram. When I added the 1st gen Intel 80Gb SSD a few months later it felt like a bigger difference than the previous upgrade.
 
I also have x2 300GB Velociraptors (in a stripe) and can kind of understand where you're coming from. I have SSDs (Including a Samsung 830) in 2 other computers, but these drives perform so well in my gaming rig that I'm not worried about upgrading to a SSD. Maybe at some point in the future, when the larger SSDs are cheaper.
 
the raptors in RAID will be your new game drive, and the SSD will be your OS drive. Ive been running this setup for a few years now. you'll thank me later.

I run the OS on a 300GB VR, the Game drive is a 300GB VR as well. I bought a 500GB VR a few months back from a newegg sale which is still sitting empty. I will likely move the games to the 500 GB since its nearly full. Dunno what ill do with the 2x 300GB VRs. I also have a 750GB black for storage as well as a 2TB drive. Might just save them for the media server project.

I dont expect to get full SATA speed out of the SSD though since im running so many drives off the controller now which is only SATA2. The 2TB is USB but thats still 4 drives plus the SSD.
 
Sata 2 doesn't really matter. Its all about the near instant access time and fantastic random IO performance. The straight line speed between Sata 2 and Sata 3 isn't that noticeable in normal task.

Let me tell you about my experience with my corsair SSD Raid O with X58. OS booting and response time in the OS was almost instant. But after close to two years I finally had my first SSD issue. I was currently using Windows 8 Pro and was just started playing StarCraft 2 heart of the swarm. Then the pre-rendered scene was stuttering. Which I found extremely odd because this isn't taxing my GPUs it's just a movie. I also had this stuttering when I was playing world of warcraft mist of panderia and Diablo 3. Obviously the first thing that came to my mind was. "Well I only changed OS from Windows 7 to Windows 8, time to go back to Windows 7 ". Well I got the same stuttering in Windows 7 and it crashed the OS too with this endless recovering screen that was on for one hour till I finally shut the PC down. Well I am back to my Raid 0 Raptors now and the stuttering is gone in StarCraft 2 and in Diablo 3. I did have some stuttering in World of Warcraft, but I quit so I would never know if it was a SSD issue or Crossfire issue.

Also remember if you choose to use the SSD, remember to secure erase every time you reformat. It helps with performance and there is a sticky on how to at the corsair forums.

You should put them in Raid0 and then use them for your games :). The 500GB can keep sitting around. Lol
 
Have a TB of SSD.
Hard drives have always been a bottleneck of having a high performance computer.
Copying, saving, opening
Games it only improves load times though.

Probably the favourite part about my pc.

Once you go SSD you will never (willingly) go back.

x2. I even install SSD's in my computers at work because I can't stand spinners for OS anymore. And I'm talking SSD's that I personally own, it's that big of a difference that I am willing to risk an SSD of my own.

My advice having had SSDs and velociraptors is to keep the SSD. Sell the Velociraptors while you still can get money for them.

as in HDD space, not slots. I have a Corsaid 700D. lol.

SSDLife if you want to look at the level of wear however that (or any other software) will not tell you that your SSD is about to die because of a controller failure or firmware bug.. Although with that said Intel SSDs are very reliable.

I have to agree here, once you see the change, you never want to go back for your personal systems. it's like when you went from 2 or 3 Gig of ram because it was so expensige you could only afford 1G sticks, Then the price went downs and more ram was the best and fastest way to gain speed, now it's ssd's

So far marginal gains. The only real noticable thing is boot and shut down times. Nothing else is really faster.

ive proudly owned 2x 600gb velociraptors in raid 0 and since upgrading to sata 3 over two years ago ive reinstalled those velociraptors into the kids computers. Im currently running ocz vector 512 gb OS and samsung 840 pro 512gb as secondary hard drive.. I would and could never ever go back to HDD of any kind. Theyre simply slow and obsolete.
 
I kind of shocked that there are still reservations about using SSD's. I suppose there is some weight in the argument that their cost/GB is poor, but if you calculate cost/performance (which is what counts) SSD blows HDD's out of the water. Random 4k with queued depth (a very standard workload) on SSD's is astronomically faster than HDD's. I've installed HDD's in my system to just see how much slower it is than with my SSD, and the system is noticeably slower. After using an SSD and trying an HDD, I could never use an HDD again as the OS/app drive. Hell, I've considered buying a new SSD for my home PC just so I can use my old one at work (using HDD there).

I've never seen a skinned Crystal Disk Mark.

This is a key point. Also if you periodically leave your PC for awhile (watch an inning, quarter, etc.) and then return there's no spin-up lag. I use 128GB SSD's for OS/Office/Apps and 1 favorite game, all else to regular spinner and backups to Server. They're much more snappy in day to day tasks. BTW: my Server uses WD Blacks, keep 'em for your planned build.

While it sure as hell doesn't have any space, my 128GB Vertex 3 beats the shit out of my 7200RPMx5 RAID 0. Unless all you're doing is looking at the sequential numbers, which I think he is since he may not understand wtf he's looking at. He still has 2xRaptors when they are a complete and utter waste of money compared to any 7200RPM RAID solution nowadays, so it wouldn't surprise me. Why get 2x1TB Raptors (modern example, as if you're buying the smaller ones nowadays you may as well just throw your money in the trash) when I can get 5x1TB 7200RPM anything, save some money AND have insane performance in comparison with much less heat per drive?

$/GB of Raptors has and is so bad when compared to SSD you may as well get SSD and actually have something truly fast, but hey, that's just me :p

Maybe if he had asked this question 5 years ago it wouldn't seem so dim, but I could've sworn this was 2013
 
Crystal Disk is one of many HDD tests used for benchmarking, and not the end-all be-all to say the least. You need to run more than one benchmark in order to see the strengths and weaknesses of both the drives being tested and the tools you're using to test them.

I prefer PCMark Vantage (tends to give closer to real world examples) or ATTO, myself, but when reading reviews it's important to understand that each benchmark program tests slightly differently, thus yielding slightly different results (in some cases wildly different, for example with caching drives).
 
I probably forgot to untick a box though it turns out Crystal disk comes with a lot of bloat (deltasearch, browser protect).
That was annoying.
 
Been there done that, super annoying. I've had it install a toolbar called Trustworthy when I wasn't paying attention to the installer before. What a lame name for something no one wants.

Anyways I'm glad they still offer it as an installer less zip.
