To recover data

Last week I had a bad experience. My hard disk got crashed and I lost some important files. I think keeping our important files on an external hard disk is not safe. We should keep a backup of that file to avoid this kind of issues. Anyway, I decided to create a backup file and keep it online like this http://www.storagepipe.com/services/endpoint-backup-and-sync/. Are there any ways to restore the data from the broken hard drive. I hope I can get some tips from here. Thank you in advance.

what was the operating system? windows?

i like parted magic, although NOT designed for it it can recover files from some hard drives.

just don't use the freezer "trick". please for the love of deity don't.
