I just upgraded my comp with a single 500GB Barracuda SATA2 7200.10 Drive. In the past Ive always used two IDE drives: a small one ~40GB for my OS and a storage drive. With SATA2 is it neccassary to do the same? Should I even worry about partitioning my new drive? Should I get a second small SATA2 drive just for my OS? or should I just leave everything on the 500GB cuda?

Thanks

I have two separate partitions, one for the OS and one for my data. I just find it easier not having to get all my music and movies back everytime I want to reinstall the os. It's more out of convenience for me. So I'd suggest doing it just because it will make your life easier when you have to reinstall windows.

Either way.. doesn't really matter. I personally like to keep my data on a seperate physical drive, but of course I'm old, and this is probably more of an old habit than anything else. With a drive the size of yours, you could easily just break it into two partitions and keep your os an one and your data on the other....

ah so its no longer an issue of performance to have a spererate drive/partition for the OS but convenience. Cool that makes me feel better about getting just one big drive. I will most likely partition for furture windows reinstall.

Thanks

if you have a harddrive and paritition it into 2 drives, if partition 1 has drive failure (clicks), will it affect the other partition?

will you be able to still use the other partition safely?? just dont touch the messed up partition?

If the drive fails, all partitions will be affected. Convenience is the only benefit from multiple partitions really.

The first third of a partitioned drive is a little bit faster than the rest of the disk due to being on the outside edge, which is one reason I always partition my raptors with 33% on C and 67% on D.
