I currently run an E6300 at 2.8ghz, I would like to upgrade to something better. I am running a 650 SLi board which can support most CPUs out there but I am a little torn on what to get.

The E6600 seems to be the CPU most people go with, however I was also looking at the
E6750 and the E6850 as well then there are the new Intel beast which leaves me at another crossroad.

The only other option I am thinking of right now is, should I just wait and upgrade mobo and CPU when the Penryns and Wolfdales hit mainstream next year. My system runs fine now but I just like to continually upgrade not to the best available but marginal jumps.

I know it seems like wasted money but I consistently get asked to build computers for people and they always offer a couple hundred dollars for me to do so.

Anyway thoughts, suggestions, etc..........anything would be appecitated!!

Well, I got treated to lunch on the day I was building it... Kind of works out.


You're probably better off doing a CPU/Mobo upgrade after the new ones hit mainstream.

Unless you want to be [H], and grab an E6750 (check compatibility with your motherboard... P5N-E SLI? eVGA 650i?).

It is wasted money. 2.8Ghz is plenty at the moment. Also, E6600's are outdated, having been replaced pretty much entirely by the more OCable E6750s. ~$200 for an E6750 that'll get you up to around 3.6Ghz doesn't sound like a great plan to me -- maybe $280 for a G0 stepping Q6600, but if you aren't doing anything that makes good use of a quad (mostly encoding or video editing) there is zero reason to throw down near to $300 for a processor upgrade.

Wait until the machine you have now fails to do something you want it to do. Then upgrade. There's no reason to make it faster if there's no reason for it to go faster.
 
I could always use the money to work on the EJ20s I have laying around.

Cars and Computers they go hand in hand!!!
 
Try oc'ing the CPU a little more.

Or you could buy a 8800GT something.
 
Thats the problem I have an MSi P6N 650 SLi and once I try to push it up above 2.8ghz the system will not even boot.

It keeps telling me the FSB is not supported by this CPU and some other random crap and the Mobo does the smart thing and resets to its default setting. I am still relatively new but I went through 100plus pages of the OC thread we have and it seems that this mobo has a dead spot and for me its anything above 2.8ghz.

I even tried skipping certain ranges which is dangerous and followed a few exact drawn out steps to do just that but alas it keeps failing.

Try to get better cooling on the northbridge and southbridge chips. Moreso the northbridge. Pull the heatsink and replace paste. Put a fan on it. Maybe buy a Thermalright aftermarket heatsink for it. The 600 series chips run hot, and that limits your FSB.

All of that said, it may be your CPU rather than the board.
 
Either go to quad, or don't bother. You have plenty of CPU already for the time being, so spend that money on RAM or GPU, or hell, splurge on a display.
 
I went from a 7950GT 512 to the 8800GT Superclocked edition, and besides upping the AA I cannot really tell a difference in my games. I was thinking the CPU could be bottlenecking my vid card.

I play WoW, Guildwars, and going to Crysis shortly but in all the games that I have other than the upped AA there is no noticeable difference not even in framerate whatsoever.
 
WoW and Guildwars aren't demanding by today's standards. At all.

With Crysis you'd notice the difference between the 7950 and 8800GT.

What size/res monitor are you running?

Yeah, the 7950 would choke in a big way at 1680x1050 in Crysis. The 8800GT isn't going to do wonders either, honestly. Don't expect the world from that game -- it looks good, but not as good as advertised, and it runs poorly.
 
From the looks of it thats the best I do then, holding off for another 7 months or so before changing things out will not be to big of a deal. I normally do major upgrades every year and a half anyway.

I had to call my buddy I put 1440 x 900 and I was wrong I am at work now so I wasnt sure!!!

But if it struggles when Warhammer Online comes out I am going to throw a tantrum LOL!!!!

I'd spend the money on a real system bottleneck,the HD.You're 2.8 oc'd Core2 is plenty fast for games,etc,now.I'd grab a Raptor,or more ram.Or a video card upgrade,depending on what you have now.GL ! :)
 
Will getting a raptor really make that much of a difference? I understand that it can access the data faster but I didnt think it made a big difference in overall performance.

a raptor will load windows faster and probably load levels faster too but it won't help framerates + it's $150. At high resolutions you will be bottlenecked by the video card.

Raptors are... blah. For almost the same amount of money you can Raid0 a pair of 500GB Seagate 7200.10/11's and they'll be faster with ~3x the space.
