I bought a Thermaltake Big Typhoon for my XP 2500+ Barton which I plan to overclock.

I find the surface looks a bit rough but it may just be my imagination after seeing and reading about all these latest coolers with a "mirror finish".
I may just be having a case of mirror envy :)

Anyway, if you know what the contact surface of the BT looks like, then should I or shouldn't I lap? Will it help my temps?

[EDIT]
Yay I did it! I uploaded the pics here: (Have mercy on the crappy webpage and the bad photo skillz).

Let me know whether you think it needs to be lapped or not.
[EDIT]

I would say lap it. Thermaltake's lapping jobs are absolutely horrible! It doesn't just look bad, but it feels bad too!

Ahh that's what I thought too! It felt kinda rough. I guess I am not suffering from mirror envy.

Anyone with suggestions on how to do the lap. It's a pretty big sink to hold and move it evenly over sandpaper (based on the methods layed out in lapping guides I've already read).

I just lapped my XP-90 and I'd say it is not as easy at it looks in the howtos. At least I was not expecting it to be so involved. I think I may have ruined my heatsink, and will have to replace it.

So just know going into it that it does require a fair bit of effort, oh and SKILL to. I think that I am all thumbs when it comes to wetsanding.

For mine, it wasn't too hard. Didn't do the best job I could have; didn't stay on 400 (or was it 600?) grit long enough, too impatient rofl.

Wish I could post some pics so someone could see if it is really bad or not.
How would I go about posting a pic?

Upload your picture somewhere. Then, when you're posting, you want to click the little icon that looks like a mountain with a sun:
download.php

Then put the URL of the uploaded pic in the box that comes up.

Edit: hmm, looks like it doesn't like my image... o well, just click that link to see what it looks like (if I didn't describe it adequately ;))
