TN panels taking over?

Is it me or does it seem that TN panels are taking over? I want a good monitor for gaming without spending a fortune on a Eizo or NEC.

Most people buy LCD screens based on the manufacturer or the size, not on the panel inside. And to be honest, the difference between TN and more expensive panels is not noticeable for most users (unless placed next to each other).

Once you have had something better there is no going back to TN, but yah first time LCD buyers don't know the difference. My neighbor just bought a new XPS system with a 22 in. pannel. I noticed that it sucked right away, but I did not say anything, because he seems to be happy with it.

No TNs for me.

The average joe wants cheap. Besides price, he won't know or care about the differences between cheap TN and other panel technologies.

seems like TN panels are taking over...............WHACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only because they are cheaper to manufacture and cost less than rival panels. If IPS cost less they would be taking over.

TN's are taking over? Where have you all been? TN's took over a long time ago. The often ridiculous price of the shrinking number of s-ips panels, and the fact that tn panels are way below what I can accept visually, has led me to buy severeral used ag crt's of late.

Would I like a pair of 22" IPS monitors, absolutely. I looked at the 20" NEC IPS monitor at Frys in Atlanta last year and drooled, but didn't buy them, not that I couldn't afford them, but couldn't justify the cost. Last week I bought two 22" HP w2207s at Staples for $245 each and although they might not be the best money can buy, I can definitely accept them visually.

It seems like in the smaller sizes this is true because in the 22" and under category, price is king because these displays are directed towards the mainstream.
I've got a Benq T905 19" 4:3 display which is a TN panel. I've got it next to my Samsung 275T which is a 27" wide screen display. This monitor is S-PVA based and there is absolutely no comparison. The Samsung display shows so much more detail than my Benq and the colors are so much nicer. Black level is pretty much not comparable in my opinion too.

IMHO you get what you pay for. If you want a non TN panel, you pay a bit more money...

With 24" models, several manufacturers are "updating" their VA variant models with
TN panels. Unfortunately, I am really not seeing the price savings being passed down to
the consumer.

You should be. The Samsung 245T is much more expensive than the Samsung 245B.

I have to beg to differ about the price of TNs really being a driving force insofar as the companies themselves. Yes, they might be a little cheaper to manufacture, but by pushing TNs I am willing to bet they use that to buoy the price of VA and IPS panels. They save a few bucks a panel, but over millions of panels that's millions in savings, while they keep the prices higher for VA and IPS monitors to make extra profit on those.

I think all of this happened because they basically hit the ceiling on what they can do with LCD panels themselves, so instead of innovation we see the separation of panels into cheap, mid-range and high range, with prices set accordingly.

That's my take on the whole thing anyway. Once they hit the same wall with backlighting schemes we will see more variations on the theme. :D

i can relate to this, I'm never going back to TN not after a decent S-IPS panel.

Well, I read all these while looking for lcds. For me (in India) I didnt have almost any choice other than the 3008wfp which sells for $2000+ for an IPS panel. And no way I can afford that.

All I needed was two monitors that I can use while I work on lot of windows. Nothing graphic intensive. Like any average person, got Ultrasharp 2208wfp for $350 each. I considered 226bw, but it sells for around $550 a piece. And here in India, Dell's support is miles ahead compared to others.

Maybe I will think of changing these if my need grows or I have enough money to spend on IPS panels. There might be something totally different in the market by then :)

For now, Im happy with the TNs.
