TN dithering noticeable these days?

I'm happy with my e-IPS NEC but I've been looking at the 120Hz monitors which are all TN. I've got a ViewSonic 17" value monitor here and the dithering is horrible. It's a cheap monitor though, and so I'm wondering if they have better algorithms these days on the higher end TNs? Will it really be noticeable?

It might be slightly noticeable if you have the eIPS display and the TN side by side, but if you're using the TN by itself your eyes will adjust to it quickly. Modern/higher-end TN panels do alright these days. Best way to find out is to try it yourself though.

Not in most panels. The Hi-FRC method employed is a temporal dither that looks more like noise close up than anything else. Since it's not an 8-bit display, you might notice banding in gradients - not necessarily harsh transitions, but rather inaccurate color like reddish/blue tones in a black to white gradient.

Good to know. The ViewSonic one seemed to use standard dithering and a very poor algorithm. I could easily tell pixels changing even on a black screen.

No. Dithering isnt the biggest problem with TNs. While they are just 6-bit colored, at worst it just shows slightly off and dull colors if you have good IPS or *VA monitor next to it, but dithering itself is not really noticeably. You might see banding in color stripes, but in RL usage its practically invisible.

The bottom half of lagom.nl's black level page is a very informative discussion about dithering, with pictures.

Hm I dont see any dithering symptoms in this test, im able to see all of the boxes including box 1. using a Samsung LED PX2370 (TN panel). Im not saying its not there just that whatever method its using isnt very obvious to the naked eye.

That's good to know since I was looking at the Samsung 120Hz. Seems their algorithms are pretty decent these days.

Now I've just got to figure out if I want to do 3D Vision or just use 2D. Can you realistically game for hours at a time with 3DV? I played with it in a shop for 5 minutes or so and didn't have any ill effects but that was a short period of time.
