TMPGEnc

It's a fantastic program... assuming it does what you want to do with it! :)

What is you're looking to do? If you're trying to edit a text file, it's going to suck! But if you're trying to encode video, it's going to do a good job.

I use several apps,

Sony Vegas Pro 8.1 (64bit)
Cyberlink Power Director 7 Ultra
Cyberlink Mediashow Espresso
TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress

I only use TMPGEnc for file types not supported by the other apps (*.mkv for example) because they're all better at converting and transcoding then TMPGEnc.

Sony Vegas Pro is by far my favorite of the lot.

My friend recommended this program, TMPGEnc, to me. http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te4xp.html
Anyone know if it's any good or any good alternative programs for free.

This really is a POWERFUL puppy. I bought it 18 months ago and it'll pretty much convert any unencrypted media to whatever you want. 18 months ago there was nothing like it for free as far as I could determine, that my have changed. $100 and free upgrades (at least for the same major version as purchased).

My primary purpose for getting it was to convert stuff for my Zune and Flash video. The latest version of RealPlayer includes Flash conversion - VERY NICE FEATURE!!!

Vegas Pro is $600 vs $100 it should be 6 times better. For casual conversion TMPGEnc will be more than enough.
