With the defense attorney asking for 15 years and the prosecutor wanting 25, I guess this guy’s sentence was a compromise that made everyone happy. Well, maybe not “everyone.” :D

Sentencing him in Boston, Judge Patti Saris said: "This is the largest and most costly example of computer hacking in US history." The sentence was less than the 25 years demanded by prosecutors and Saris said several factors were taken into consideration.

Look I'm all for punishing this guy, but there are violent offenses that have a far shorter sentence time in the pokey.

The time needs to fit the crime. Is this guys non-violent crime actually worse than a (felony) violent offender? I'm not so sure.

He intentionally stole millions of dollars and caused hundreds of millions in damages. In the end, we're the ones that will pay for it If anything, the sentence was lenient.

If someone kills someone or rapes someone then that person and their families have to pay for the crime for the rest of their lives but a lot of the people that commit those crimes get lesss than 20 years.
 
Indeed. The time needs to fit the crime. I believe they should have sentence him to longer terms. Even though he didn't do bodily harm to another person, his crime alone affected millions of people and their lively hood. Basically taking food from their tables and their kids to feed himself. It's how you look at it. A crime doesn't need to be violent in order to receive a lenient sentence..

Unless you're trying to suggest the TJX hacker should get a more lenient sentence because some violent offenders get off lighter than he does, I'm not quite sure what your argument is and how it relates to his sentencing.
 
I'd rather instead of jail time (since out system is over burdened,) that each person that he ended up stealing money from get's to punch him once for every dollar he stole. Although I guess if its up in the millions, then it would take 20+ years to work through all the punches he needs to take. Maybe we could take it easy on him and its one hit for every $10.
 
I agree, the sentence needs to fit the crime. therefore, he should have got 30 years and murderers and rapists should get death sentence/40yrs to life + castration...at least bring back good old "hard time" and have these guys bustin rocks or digging holes all day...

No I think what he is saying that it is just money. You can't un-rape someone, or bring them back to life. Money can be gotten back. Yet his punishment is that a rapist or murderer gets a lot of the time.
 
Well, if he was stealing money from the banks, then it didn't really effect the people since they are protected. So wtf with this harsh sentence?
 
rapes just hurts one person or family, and murders just makes people dead... but stealing millions of dollars costs people a LOT of money, thats why the punishment is so much worse. this is america, we live and die by cotton paper.
