Well I want to put a bigger HDD in my Tivo. I opened it up and it's just standard IDE. I have a direct tv series 2 Tivo. My question is do I need to format it if so then how do I format it? Thanks in advance.

No it is not that easy, the OS is on the drive, so without that your TiVo will not boot.

Do a google search, you will find a forum called "Deal Database" that has the most current Tivo info. While it is nitpicky, and requires a bit of Linux knowledge (TiVo's use Linux) , it is not that hard.

Really if you want the easiest way to do it, buy your drive from 9th Tee or a similar vendor as they will already have the OS on the drive for you. I purchased my cachecard from them, they are reliable.
