when the mods/admins ban, it'd be nice if they differentiated the titles between temp-bans and perma-bans. for example, perma-ban would simply be "banned", and those "on vacation" should be labeled as such. it would help clear things up for those of us wondering if a person shall ever return. while some mods/admins do this, others don't, and i bet the ones who don't get tired of getting pm-ed by users wondering what other user's status may be.

When you ban someone through the system, there is no choice as to the wording...it's either a one or a zero ;) Most of us will denote the length if it is a temp ban, but not always. The mods do not ban, only the Admins, so don't blame them when there is a ban. They make a recommendation and the Admins check the member's record and make the call on whether to take no action, temp ban or permanently ban a user.

thank you for the prompt response, majordomo. hope more mods specify ban length, then.

Actually, I was doing that for a while, but Kyle asked me not to. Apparently some people don't like their dirty laundry being aired in public and custom titles like "3-day ban for threadcrapping" generate more emails to him than the standard "why was I banned?". ;)

If it's a temp ban, I usually put the length of the ban in the location field. In that way, once the ban is lifted (automatically by the system) the user can remove the extra info and I don't have to remember to go back.
