heres the laptop we are talking about
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157896

Found it on the side of the road and all it needed was a NEW hdd.

specs:
Dual core phenom 2.9ghz
8gb ddr3 ram
640 7200rpm drive
1600x900
Switchable graphics card
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470.
Windows 7 home 64bit

Plays some games meh, but I wondered if anyone has tips/programs to help things? IE: disable aero and www.downloadmoreram.com these kinda things. I will be getting a SSD shortly to help with load times.

meh

get the SSD, thats gonna make the biggest difference. A nice fresh windows install helps majorly as well...... Dont use crappy programs, just do basic stuff, disable aero, get rid of any bloatware.

The only real hardware upgrade that will make a difference is basically the SSD.

Hopefully this doesn't go awry due to the opinions regarding UI design but Windows 8 is generally considered to run better on lower end hardware than Win 7. Although I wouldn't necessarily say the difference is worth the cost of a license upgrade. Otherwise, like said above, try to do a clean install.

The other thing would be also to check temperatures. Cooling system could need a cleaning and/or re-pasting.
