tips on the actual building

i have everything ordered and will build on sunday if i get all the parts by then. are there any special tips that i should know when building? i've heard of stuff such as grounding myself at all times (isnt standing on the ground enough??)

i always float above teh ground when i build im so Happy LULZ :D. I dont move my feet and never really grounded myself honestly but i DO hold the case before i put the hardware in first to discharge dunno kinda a personal thing i guess or habit. Happy Building and Guud Lux :D
 
Just take reasonable precautions and you'll be fine. Think about things like cable management/layout before you start building, as it is easier to get that right the first time than going back and fixing it later.
 
go ahead and wear the little wrist strap. it looks silly, but could save you a lot of headache, hassle, time, and $.

go slow. 99.9% of the time, Force is incorrect. If it won't go, step back and flex the big grey muscle.

go away. it's easy to get a big old nerd boner and dick something up in your excitement for your new toy just enough to frustrate you, and make you dick something else up. take a walk. bang the gf/bf. watch a movie.

get a cup to hold your screws.

if it arcs to the pins it really can...honest, those little chips are fragile electrically

just pet the chassis frequently to stay at the same potential as your system ground and don't sweat it
 
just curious, how is mere static going to fry my electronics?

Because of this:

Microchip damage can occur if it is exposed to static electricity as low as 10 volts, and humans are not able to perceive static electricity until it has reached about 1,500 volts.

Walking across a rug can produce a static electricity voltage of up to 12,000 volts,
 
yes, but how is built up charge on components going to do anything to damage them? that's what i do not get :(

I knew it was high, actually thought it was a bit higher than what you said but I didn't bother looking for other sources. I know it can get up there though.

Lightning is static electricity. Just think about that. You're basically striking your parts/components directly with small lightning bolts. Electricity in crossing components that aren't supposed to be, giving a part too many volts, etc.. can all damage the part.

yes, but doesn't electricity flow in the components they are on? how is a little static electricity buildup going to do anything (with no flow of the charge)
 
If you are carrying a charge on your hand and then touch a component, it can discharge into the component even if the power is off. Since those chips are designed to work with low voltage (around 1 volt), pushing 10,000 volts through it, even at low amps, can cause damage by short circuiting the chip/component - the insulating layers are designed to keep low voltages isolated so the high voltages will burn right through the insulating layer and can create a permanent hole which allows current to flow where it isn't suposed to when power is on.

Atoms are made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons. electrons are negative, protons are positive, and neutrons are lazy fucks with no charge at all.

When you walk, sit, rub your feet on the carpet etc, you pick up electrons. Congratulations, you now have an electrical charge. As was mentioned before, you now pick up your nice shiny new component. Which is just chock full of circuits, designed for generally very low voltage.

If your component has a positive charge and you have a negative, the electrons will flow until a balance is reached. They aren't just going to spread out into a sparkly cloud of electrical love however, they're going to go blasting through your equipment to get to wherever they need to balance.

So you've just shoved the electrical equivalent of a baseball bat up your shiny new stuffs oh so delicate, tight, quivering little ass.

Yes. Just like electricity is designed to flow through power lines, but what happens when lightning strikes it?

Same with your stuff. When more voltage than what it required hits those components, it short circuits them. Unlike power lines where they usually have a breaker that gets flipped, each lil piece on that part doesn't have it's own breaker so something has to give.
 
Be sure the mounting screws in your case set up correctly with your motherboard screw holes. You can fry your board otherwise.
