Get a load of this, scientists say they have designed a machine just a few molecules in size that actually mimics how the brain works. Researchers believe this can be used as the foundation for a super powerful computer or used to power a complex microscopic machine. Thanks to Eric for the link.

The idea is to hook this new gadget up with other molecules — either copies of itself or different compounds other scientists have invented. For instance, researchers have created a host of machines just a molecule or so large over the last decade or two — motors, propellers, switches, elevators, sensors and so on. The new invention might offer a way to control all those other compounds to work as a whole.

Let me guess, scientists are employed at a new company called Cyberdyne
And have dubbed their creation "Cyberdyne systems model 1" (precursor to the T-101)

This relation to the brain is simply based on the branching patterns that neurons have. This allows for a very complex network of potentially reprogrammable (learning if you will) connections.

It would be like providing multiple magnitudes beyond simple binary notation. Nothing directly to do with AI.

I'm waiting for the day when we can just put a little chip through the soft spot of a newborn's head and it will just download all the information they'll ever need in life to their brains. Then by the age of six they can start working.

like The Matrix! but with child abuse lol

come on man children need their childhoods!

Hi there, Im the one who sumbitted this news link, and this is my first post, so go easy on me.

I love this site, and the lastest news on the front page is really up to date. I come here every day for new news, and thought I would contribute, for it was the least I could do for the great help that I got in the past with reviews, and helping me decide how to build my own computer for the first time.

And for you guys who are saying skynet...

Its already here.

The device needs to be made in vacuum conditions at extremely cold temperatures — about -321 degrees F (-196 degrees C). Bandyopadhyay said it could be operated at room temperature, however

I am sure thats what they said about superconductors as well. I also can't find any reference to what speed it's actually working at. Sounds to me like a whole lotta specualtion.

This means it could perform 1,024 instructions at once, for 4^1024 different outcomes — a number larger than a 1 with 1,000 zeroes after it.

For some reason I found this sentence amusing :)

What was it Mr Hawking was saying a few years ago,how it wont be nuclear or bio that kills us off as a race, but nanotechnology, and the evolution of tech like this in conjunction with it.

Spooky stuff, and neat at the same time...

Yeah, I wasn't sure if we were gonna die like Ahhhhnold or SG1 was gonna beam in with something to kill of "Replicators".:rolleyes::p

Needless to say, we need someone other than geeky pinheads actually making the decisions about what angle to pursue.... just in case.

Hawking is right, how the FK do we do battle with microscopic nano-killer-robots that drill into your skin, trvel to your brain and toss in a nano MONKEY WRENCH!!!

DOH.
