I am having pretty decient output of work units on the two systems I currently fold with. One is an HTPC and the other is my main workhorse. I was noticing that when I reboot either one of them after having them run for a few days that it seemed to speed them up a bit. I know this cleans memory and processes so I was wondering if I can have them rebooted on a daily basis to help the speed of this process.

Is their a program that will reboot my machine lets say every 24hrs? I think it will help on the output side. I setup the machines to save their work every 5 minutes so that I don't loose a lot of information.

Any suggestions on speeding these things up or helping with them slowing down over time would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :D

Never heard of a program that reboots comps after x time, but I run Electron Microscope 3 and I just wait for it to tell me when the frame is done with the current WU and then I choose to reboot with my machines...

You are right, a reboot will make things fold a tad faster but it's not earth shattering. I do a manual reboot from time to time myself. I'd never reboot while a WU is in progress though, I don't trust the "save" part that much ;)

i used to save every 3 minutes.

then someone told me something...

...something..drastic....

...it changed my life...

....forever.....

....setting the checkpoint to every 3 minutes......

....makes the WU take TWO HOURS LONGER

what's the optimum save point then?
i don't know. i just leave mine on 15. i guess if you never restart, 30 is the best. if you feel comfortable, risk 20. it all comes down to how much work you're willing to lose...

I can remember when there were no checkpoints

That sucked.

Yes it did suck, lots of lost work. Checkpoints were a good idea. I'd say that if rebooting is really making that big a difference then maybe something else is wrong with the box causing it to slow down over time.

I dont trust the autosave feature either. If your running as a service just manually stop the service before rebooting the box. This way it will save its progress and not run into the problem of the box shutting down before the work was saved.
Same thing works on graphical client too. Just stop the program before your reboot! :)

Why does setting the save point every 3 mins mean that the work unit takes 2 hours longer.

I've run F@H on a ram drive as well as a hard drive on one of my duallies.
The time difference between the two was measured in seconds for the whole work unit.

Plus only Amber cores make use of the save points, Tinkers & Gromacs dont.

Luck........ :D
