Okay, I have a Western Ditigal 80 gig harddrive, WD800JB. I've had it for about 2 years now and I've been happy with it.

I read the FAQ about clicking and all that but I need your guys help, here is what is going on:

I recently just got my whole new 64 setup and I was relaxing one day and I heard a clicking noise. I checked all the fans, nothing, so I am just about positive that it is coming from my harddrive. Then I shut down Folding@Home to go do something, and I noticed the clicking stopped. I turned Folding back on and the clicking was audible again. So my question is, should I get a new harddrive becuase mine might fail soon, or am I alright? I know I am going to upgrade my harddrive in a little while, but I want to hold off as long as possible.

If you want a audio sample to hear the clicking, tell me, and I get one for you guys.

Cliff Notes:
1. Harddrive working fine
2. Harddrive clicks only when Folding
3. Should I upgrade?

Sometimes hard drives click. If you're paranoid, run chkdsk, it's a good idea anyway. Also backing up your data is ALWAYS a good idea, as hard drive failure tends to be a sudden and unexpected thing. At that, most data loss is caused by software issues not hardware ones...

How much RAM is F@H using? I'd speculate that it's gobbling most of your RAM and paging to disk. Obviously, clicking is not a good thing though. Run diagnostics from WD on the drive and backup user data you can't simply reinstall. If the drive passes diagnostics, I'd leave it alone (other than the backup, which is always a good idea) and tweak F@H to eliminate hte paging.
 
I just had 2 800jb's die on me, both were almost 2 yrs old. Both were in different rigs. 800jb's suck in my book.

Well I have a gig of Ram and when I look in the Task Manager it says that:
winFAH.exe--------9,848k mem usage
FahCore_82.exe(the one that does all the work)------3,624k

This just seems odd that it would be clicking just when I am folding. I'll run chkdsk and I'll see if I can find the WD disk.

As for reliablity, I've had no other problems with this drive, my friend also has had one for quite a while without any problems. I know that this clicking may be a sign of future failure, but I won't call this drive unreliable yet.
 
Hmm well I downloaded the checking tool thingy from WD's website, I did the extended scan and it found nothing. So....any other ideas just to make sure?
