Time to upgrade?

Hey all,

I'm upgrading my current system and I'm wondering if I can hang onto my current PS, or if it's time to upgrade. My current PS is a PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 SLI.

I haven't picked out the exact parts yet, but it goes something like this:

Mobo: Asus P8P67 Pro (or standard, or Sabertooth)
CPU: i5-2500k (with an air cooled OC)
Memory: 2x4gb flavor of the week (most likely some Ripjaws)
Video card: GTX570 (already have this)
HD1: 80gb Intel SSD
HD2: 7200rpm 1.5tb Western Digital

It's a pretty basic setup. I'll do an air cooled overclock using a cooler that I haven't picked out yet. Anyway, this is all upgrading my current system, going into the nice Antec case I already have. Since I'm not planning on SLI, will that PS be good enough, or is it time to upgrade?

Thanks!

That power supply is enough for pretty much any single graphics card configuration (besides 6990 and 590, overclocked).

When in doubt, get a Kill-a-watt. But I think you could probably use that PSU and system, and have enough power left over to run an electric chainsaw. You're probably looking at around 350w at the wall while gaming, and that's with an average-ish OC. If you're worried about noise though, I think it's better to have a higher capacity, higher efficiency PSU so it stays cool and quiet under load. That's pretty much a luxury though, and my thoughts are spend the money somewhere else.

Thanks for the replies - I got everything put together and got my OC stable... I ran the system through a series of stress tests and everything seemed great. Then while playing Crysis 2 the system shut down and wouldn't power back on. The power supply wasn't even powering the LED on the mobo. I unplugged everything except the 12v and 5v connector and still no joy. Power supply was flat out dead.

So I went to Fry's and grabbed a Thermaltake 750w to hold me over. It seems to be doing the job perfectly, and like the last comment mentions, it is much quieter.

All in all I ended up with a stable, air cooled, 5ghz overclock. However, not being too greedy I backed this down a couple notches to be certain my cooler and new PS could keep up. If I remember correctly, from x49 to x47 multiplier.

lucky for you it only killed itself. Contact pc power&cooling for a warranty replacement. Their coverage period is 5 yrs I think.

Good idea hossdaddy, I don't think I've had that one for 5 years, so it should still be under warranty. Though, I'll continue to use the larger PS now that I have it... and yeah, I agree about being lucky. All the way home from Fry's I was thinking to myself, "man I hope it was just the PS..." :)

lol, true dat!! All the more reason to always buy a quality psu. It is NEVER a place to skimp.

Let us know how the rma process goes.
