Yea so my poor 9800xt is starting to fall behind in some of the new games coming out. I want to upgrade to something new so I can crank the settings and get some eye candy. I would prefer ATI and AGP so I was looking at the x850xtpe from visiontek , its like $350 at newegg. Should I flush the 350 to get this card or is there something else cheaper I should consider?

I would really honestly move onto PCI-E if you can swing it, AGP days are done. When I purchased my 6800GT over a year ago I was happy for awhile but then the 7800 series launched and the ATI X1000 series with no AGP avaible for the high end cards and I kicked myself in the ass for not waiting and upgrading the system. Finally I buckled and rebuilt my whole system from scratch, now I can have any GPU that comes out.

Hes right, if youve got $350 to blow on a x850xt you might as well get some 50$ more and get the 7800GT+evga mobo deal :D You will be so happy: http://www.clubit.com/product_system_detail.cfm?itemno=UPG20005&nav=5

Sorry but the x850 is just not worth it.

you dont even know if he uses a socket 939 cpu...

The man wants to stick with agp, let him stick with it. You will see a big perfomance increase going from a 9800xt to a x850xt and the hardware isnt THAT dated. It will last you a couple years atleast and THEN you can make the transition to PCI-E.

He could just sell his stuff for cheap and get a s939 cpu then, I just think blowing 350$ on an AGP card is not a smart move. If AGP is where you wanna stay dont spend more than $200 then.

I already have a 939 cpu , I was considering upgrading motherboard + ram to get pci-e but my stuff isnt very old at all. (av8/3800) I think it would be kind of a waste at this point. I wont buy any other mobo thats not an Abit tho thier line has been lackluster lately & I dont find the fat1lity mobo to be worth what they want for it so mabye get an AN8 or something o_O

Why is upgrading to another AGP card a dead end? You upgrade to a better AGP card, use it for a year or two, then the next time you upgrade, you upgrade you mobo and cpu. By then, maybe a CPU upgrade will make sense, because for a lot of people right now, it doesn't. The idea of changing your mobo, even if you can keep your cpu, just to use a PCI-e card is not the best option for people that have good rigs but still use AGP. 6800ultra cards are here and on ebay for under $300 all the time, and we've seen them as low as $220 shipped. 7800 of all flavors are much more expensive, and throwing in a board makes it moreso. And for what? If anything, that is more short-sighted because that mobo will still be replaced when you upgrade your CPU and ram a year or two down the road. The difference in a 7800 and a 6800 two years from now will be of little significance.

Hmm , after looking around.... I think i'm going to grab another gig of ram , the AN8 and an X1800XL.

Sound cool?

and instead of spending $275+ for a known 16 pipelines X800 class card you should also consider the 12 pipeline gtos/pros that start around $200

The whole dead-end thing is such bad logic, it's easy to point out the fault. Quite simply, an upgrade is an upgrade. Buying AGP means I put off getting a PCI-e mobo for later. Buy a PCI-e mobo now or later, its the same thing. Excpet later, I might actually need a new mobo for a cpu upgrade. This "dead-end" stuff is ridiculous. Now, if someone was buying an AGP mobo, that would be a dead-end.

Well Im proof that upgrading isnt cheap! As you cansee, I myself have a 9800xt (and love it still), but like Phos, Im starting to feel a little pinch...so I took the dive, reconstructing my system to accomodate a new BFG 7800 GTX OC...and it gets expensive if you dont wanna jip yourself. You cant just go upgrade a videocard and get stingy with everything else...what I also had to upgrade to get this costly pci-e card...

MOBO : $164.00 : Asus P5ND2-SLI Deluxe
CPU : $410.00 : Intel P4 660 Prescott 3.6GHz
MEM : $170.00 : 1GB Kingston HyperX KHX5400D2K2 (2 sticks)
POWER : $103.50 : Antec TruePower 2.0 EPS12V 550W
VIDEO : $499.00 : BFG Geforce 7800 GTX OC_________________
: $1346.50 :

Because I wanted to upgrade my card to fastest I could afford I had to upgrade my MOBO, because Im getting a new mobo, I sorta needed a cpu to be the brains and new memory too, and I wanted a power supply that was correct for the board too (24 pin)!

Screw it...its only cash!

I would say take the $350, get a decent PCI-E motherboard and a gto2 that can unlock instead of getting the x850xtpe

i woudl agree with the guys on the Evga mobo + 7800GT. If your goin to spend 350$ just add 50 bucks more and sell your old mobo. It might be a long process but this way you spent 350 for a 7800gt and not a X850xt which is slower. When it comes to spending such an amount work for the best.

On the other hand. A VNF4-Ultra isnt a bad deall right now 69.99 and a GTO2 for whatever it runs for. so that can be an option for ya.

Instead of spending $350 on a X850XT for AGP... try this... Only $352

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium (If you decide to go Nvidia... SLi is the way)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131540

And since your like ATI cards better
connect3D Radeon X800GTO
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814142052

^^Above card unlocks to 16pipes... With you current CPU and RAM your set.
Good luck ;)
Bad choice on the mobo. Why waste an extra $50 for a sli mobo when buying a video card that can't use SLI!

PS. SLI is a waste of money anyway. After a year, you can buy the new video card on the block thats probably faster then 2 of your old generation video cards in sli and sell your old card for half what you paid. This equals faster video card for less or same amount of money + new features + less expensive mobo not using SLI.

example: sli mobo ~$150, 6800gt ~$400. year later get another 6800gt ~$300. Total = $850
or get non sli mobo ~$100, 6800gt ~$400. year later sell 6800gt for $200 or more, buy 7800gtx ~$450. Total = $750

Phos i know you would rather stick with ATI, but try Nvidia i did and i liked it. Just look at the Mobo + 7800Gt deal its amazing.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130238

if not try this its an ATI

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814142052

with this mobo its on sale

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813152049

then use the rest of hte cash on whatever else. Cooling or Ram.

its just that the x1800xl is pricy right now and the 7800gt performs on par with it.

(please no flaming against me or for me)

If you do prefer ATI (which i dont mind cuz i have a x800xl right now) try the connect3d x800GTO and mod it to x800XTPE. Also look for a cheap mobo in price for socket 939.

I would personally pick the x1800xl over the 7800gt. The x1800xl gets Insane overclocks (~x1800xt core speeds or more) on air with voltage at 1.2 vs stock 1.1. I am pretty sure the x1800xt review models sent out were using a 1.3 voltage. Price wise the x1800xl is only ~$50 more. (7800gt $330-380 vs x1800xl $380-430). $50 gets you insane overclocks, better IQ, HDR+AA, and Being new core ATI's drivers can only get better. I already stated my opinion on SLI and Crossfire, but if money is not a factory both are cool to read about.
On another note, if you are spending over $300 on your video card you really should think about a water cooling setup. It cools better and makes a lot less noise. food for thought. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=326824

i see your reasoning not a bad idea, i guess the x1800xl is an overclocking champ, but i though that was with special cooling. So it looks like your getting told to go both ways here PHOS. ahah, i still say grab that 7800gt and the free motherboard with it. IF anything sell the motherboard to a friend or something ( it is an SLI board) and then buy a single card mobo if that helps. Otherwise the x1800xl isnt a bad card, the prices are also dropping on them which is a good thing...
