I like to game alot so any suggestions on which to try? Are they free and running crossfire will it work?
 
The most popular one seems to be Ubuntu right now. However I prefer SUSE. If you still want to game I recommend dual booting windows and linux. As far as crossfire goes, I know that SLI is supported somewhat but I am not sure about crossfire. But google can answer that question.

Suggest you go the live CD route first. Basically you download a Linux distribution and burn it to a CD (ISO), have your optical boot first in BIOS and boot off the CD. It won't actually install Linux on your HDD. Some are very small (puppy and DSL) and some are very full featured. If you find one you like you can install it.

Guess i didnt make that very clear. Want to try linux but want to know if i can still game on it. I play EQ2, Conan and various other mmos.
 
A good Linux distribution to start with is Ubuntu.

If your games don't have a Linux client, then you'll likely be playing them using WINE. You can check your games compatibility here with Linux/WINE here:

I like to surf so I am moving to Kansas.

Linux is not a gaming OS. I can only suggest you use and install Linux if you have a desire to learn commands and a new file structure. It is not a Windows alternative...
 
well, if those games ran in opengl, then linux WOULD be a gaming OS. ^.-
 
Doom 3 has a client for Linux. I play that natively along with it's expansion. I also can play mostly all my steam games including: CS:S, CS 1.6, TFC, HL1/2 and they all run great. I even installed Diablo2 with the expansion and have that working flawlessly. Most of the games took some tweaking to get them to work but work very well now. I still can't alt-tab out of many of my games but that's fine. My Amarok music player has the global keys installed so I can mess with my music without having to alt-tab. I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron about a month ago and have used it exclusively over WinXP since. What made things easy was that I had knowledge from Edgy Eft being installed for about 5-6 months about a year ago and it was a little more difficult to learn.

So yes, you can game on linux but it's not nearly as good as Wiindows. I will suggest Ubuntu as it's widely used and easy to mess with.

Instead of alt-tabbing, run the game in one workspace and your apps in another. Just switch between them by toggling which workspace you're in.
 
Depends alot on the games you play.

The whole "You cant game on linux" crowd can just shut the fuck up already. You can game on linux and there are a hell of alot more compatible games than most people think.

Take a peek at those lists and see how many games you regularly play are supported.
