Hey guys,

Just a quick one for you all:

I know a fair amount about desktop computing, but not oodles about laptops. My girlfriend is looking to move on from her Dell laptop to something that can do everything up through gaming.

Her tentative budget-ceiling is $1500, although less would be nice.

I did some looking around, and this laptop is reviewed pretty well on both newegg, and tom's hardware as being a pretty good bang for your buck.

My question to you all: is this laptop worthwhile? Or is there something markedly better within the 1000-1300 price range?

Thanks a ton for your time and advice, it's much appreciated by both of us!

Not bad, but if you or the girlfriend is going to be serious about gaming, perhaps the G51 or G73 series would be best... it's the one to beat/get these days from Asus. This one's pretty decent:

and this one is the monster but it's about $250 over budget:

Either one of those would be awesome machines, really. The one you linked to isn't a bad deal either, I'm just pointing out options that are "in the ballparK" for the most part.

Thanks for the recommendations

I looked at a few more G51's just to see how much of a difference there is...

G51JX-A1

G51JX-X1

And then I looked at the G73. Now... the G73 that you linked is a lot more expensive, and also out of stock for the next 3.5 months. However, I found a different G73 with the best specs that I have seen within the price range.

G73JH-X1

It's $1650 normally, on sale for $1450. So it's within the price range, and it looks pretty sweet to me.

It appears to be very well reviewed on a couple of different sites, and the price is right. Any thoughts on the G73JH-X1?

Thanks!

NO QUESTION. Go for the G73JH-X1 for $1450.

It was above my budget, so I bought an MSI GX640, but the other day I was at best buy and saw the G73H in person. It is the machine to get. List of good things too long to say. Bad thing, not the most ports for such a powerfull machine.

Bestbuy has a cheaper version with a lower resolution screen 900p instead of 1080p and 6 instead of 8Gigs of RAM. I would go with newegg on but it is an option if you are looking to save a few bucks.

Asus - Laptop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 17.3" Display / 6GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Black Model: G73JH-RBBX05 $1,299.99

If lack of ports is the only real issue, than that's fantastic! Cuz my girlfriend doesn't really have any peripherals other than mouse. lol.

What about heat dissipation? I know that's a common problem with gaming laptops. Anyone know how this one stacks up?

Thanks :)

The heat dissipation on the G73 is nothing short of amazingly good.

the front intake to dual read outports work really well. I cannot even compared to my lappy which has a slower CPU and GPU.

Thanks, that's not bad either. I'll see what she wants to do budget-wise.

Personally, if it were me, I'd just ditch the extra $150 and go the whole nine yards... but it's her money, so we'll see :)

Really? Wow, thanks for the info :)

Thanks so much for the review.

The guy is obviously not... impartial... but that doesn't change the hard numbers. Just his opinions.

It was very helpful to see, and has really put my mind at rest in terms of recommending this to the GF.

Thanks so much!
