more info would help, like what PSU you have and what resolution you have. the 4850 is a good card but they are announcing the next gen in a week so we could be looking at a price drop. and for another 35 dollars you can get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150394, faster and twice the memory.

I was looking at that card but i need a new psu to. im most likely going with a corsair 450 watt

Whether or not the CPU is an issue will depend on the game.

That card wouldn't be a waste of your time but remember the new series is about to come out. In the hot deals forum you can get the X2 version with 1gb of memory per core for 149. Might consider that too.

Also remember the new cards are about to come out very soon. Who knows if it will further drop the prices on these.

As for whether or not it will be an upgrade, that is entirely up to you. I would probably lean towards spending a couple more bucks for a 4870 or waiting though.

Please answer a couple of questions first.

What CPU are you currently using?

How much system memory do you currently have?

How many watts is your power supply?

Assuming your rig can handle is the 4850 is a great buy, however the 4870 is about $6-35 more and is a considerable performance boost with nearly double the memory bandwidth and a 20% increase in raw processing power.

If you cant afford it I'd suggest that you do your best to because it will be worth it in the end.

$6 more after rebate, it's factory OC'd, and it comes with a free game. $16 more without rebate.

If you dont like that brand then shoot for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131140 at $25 more

If you absolutely love XFX then go for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150394 at $35 more than what you linked.

No matter what you choose it's worth it, but I'd just get the powercolor one cuz of the free game and I dont think they are a bad brand at all.

With nvidia's current stranglehold on some developers theres a chance you may want Physx support on your card because it can change certain elements of gameplay. If you get any ATI card you cannot use your 9600gt as a physx card without some driver hacking.

The GTS 250 and the 4850 trade blows in games, but if you do choose a model I'd recommend http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127423 based on its low price regardless of rebate, its decent stock cooler and respectable factory overclock. The Physx feature is just an added bonus.

For the most part I'd say I made a mistake getting my 4850. I should have sprung for the 4870, but its all a matter of budget and opinion.

the 4850 is rated at 110w and the 4870 is rated at 150w. I dont think the 4870 will break your psu at all.

your cpu will bottleneck you regardless. i'd still shoot for the 4870. i have an athlon x2 7750 2.7ghz (dual core phenom) and my cpu holds my card back a tiny bit in some games.

i change my above statement. i didn't see you saying that its OC'd to 3.1ghz. it might be just about even.

your psu would handle a 4870. corsair power supplies provide what they are rated for. at worst you will need to use an adaptor for the second PCIe power cable.

you might like the extra power in a couple of game but otherwise a 4850 will handle 1680x1050 just fine. a cpu upgrade would not hurt you either. (what motherboard are you using?)

at any rate 4870 if you don't mind the extra 30 bucks or the 4850 if not.

look at upgrading your cpu if you feel like it (or run some newer games)
