I think its time that I finally cave in and buy a UPS for my computer. I need it because I will be typing up important assignments along with important files on my computer.

My main tower houses a 500 watt Antec Earthwatts PSU which I believe rarely goes above 300 watts at full load. I also have a 19" Acer AL1916W which uses around 60 watts operational. On top of that I have speakers and a printer which use less than 35 watts but these two do not need to be engaged to the UPS, they simply need surge protection.

There are also two more items that need to be protected from electrical exacerbation: my fax machine and the headset accessory. In total I have about four items that need UPS protection and only two of these items, the phones, need to on. The rest I can shut down and leave off.

My budget for a UPS is $200 and I was looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842102048

Please let me know if there are any more good or better UPS' out there.

Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to help a fellow [H]ard brother out.

I think I showed that UPS to someone else on another post, and I looked at it and it is good. In fact, my dad just got this UPS for his PC and I got to say, it is good.

Never heard of that brand, but feature-wise it looks like at least an okay UPS.

I'm using a 650 VA APC Back-UPS with my workstation system and am quite happy with it. Sure, it has no fancy LCD, but the monitoring software tells you everything as well. Together with MGE I'd recommend APC in a heart-beat.

Yes, APC is also a good choice. To me, for the features (correct me if I'm wrong), I think the features of APC are really good for the price - Which in some cases are cheaper then the other brands.

I have no idea which UPS to purchase. There are many good one, I wonder if I should just take the plunge with one of them.

Well, if by "Taking the Plunge" you mean making a quick decision, then you shouldn't do that. You should compare the features and the after-power-loss runtime before you make a choice.

My newbieness has a Q, whats a ups? Im guessing either a backup power source or from what i have seen, it displays how much power your using from your components?

Naturally, I don't want to do that. If I could I would get on that was online interactive all the time. I am looking at this one though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842101067

It has two surge only for the printer and speaker and the rest are perfect for what I need.

A UPS is an Uninterruptible Power Supply. Basically its a battery that supplies power to your computer so that you can keep running it or turn it off.

Most people have one so that they can stop what they are doing, save their documents and shut off the computer. It can also protect against surges, voltage under and over current protection.

Well, with APC it's hard to go wrong. Their hardware, software and customer support are all top-notch. If you need an UPS *right now*, it's a safe choice.

If you have some more time you are free to do more research on other options, of course :)
