alright, with my d80 arriving tommorow(hopefully) its time to upgrade my system to help edit this 10mp raw files!

here is what i have right now:

asus a8n deluxe mobo
amd 3200+ athlon64 @ 2.65ghz
2x512mb pc3200 ddr memory
ati x800 gto video card
dell 2005fpw 20" widescreen monitor
western digital 250gb serial ata II 7200rpm drive

i was thinking of upgrading to a dual core opteron processor and add another gig of memory. i can get the opteron 165 and overclock it to atleast 2.5ghz and matching memory for $275 all together from newegg.

sound like a good idea or would that even help at all?

Either an opteron 165 or x2 3800+ should serve well for you. Also, you could just add another 2x512 pc3200 since you just need overall more ram, unless you game a lot and would miss the little bit of performance from populating all of the slots.

So a x2 3800+ is about $150, and another gig of ram is around $70, so that'd be only $220 or so...less if you sell off your current proc on ebay or the the FS/FT subforum.

Are you using CS for processing. If so the dual core will help alot. But I dont have much of a problem handling my RAW files for my D50, granted they arent that large. Also if you do have CS2 get the CS3 Beta it is better with RAW now.

yeah i use cs2 for most of my post processing. capture nx runs a lot slower for me.

the opteron 165 is $155 retail on newegg.

and i was wanting to get the same ram i already have(kingston hyperx) which is $115 for a gig stick or $120 for matching 2x512. and no, i hardly ever game on here, at all, maybe halflife 1, cause its the best ever

if i could only do 1 upgrade right now, which would be better? dual core opteron or the 2gig upgrade?

Id go with the dual core myself. You can always get more RAM later. I believe you will benefit more from the processor up-grade. Also remember to try the CS3 beta you will get full function with your CS2 key.

More memory, a dual core processor and a bigger HD..

Oh yeah, some kind of monitor calibration tool...

Capture NX uses a TON of ram, 2gb will see the biggest boost there, but I would just to it all at once for $250.

Yeah but PS loves multi processors alot as well. It is more of up-grading both is the best way to go truthfully.

well i ordered the opteron 165 for $155 from newegg. seems lots of people are getting good overclocks on them too so thats all good :)

i'll wait on the memory for a good deal on it.
