so, its time for me to move on from my system and get a new P4, what do you guys all suggest? it cant be TOOOOOOOO expensive, at least 3 GHz? maybe 3.2

should i got LGA? or stick with 475?

lets roll in them suggestions

Bah, go with Athlon64... more bang for the buck and less heat to deal with, along with decent overclocking.
Unless you are looking to get your hands onto DDR2 and PCI-X immediately... I'd say wait till the A64's have chipsets with these technologies... they will run it better :)

well my dad is selling my computer, i was going to buy a used athlon 64 3200+ and mobo for 300

but my dad is a fucking toolface, wants intel, so here i am..

Yargh, tell your dad that its 64-bit... if he isnt a tech junkie, maybe you can fool him into thinking that its a server-grade CPU... since servers are 64-bit and all...
I got several of my frineds to do so, and it worked, and they are crazy happy/..

Definitely stick with 478, since there aren't any decent PCI-E graphics cards out yet.

If you're overclocking, I think the 3GHz will generally OC to the same range as the 3.2GHz, so you might as well save a few dollars and go with the 3GHz.

i was planning on spending 200-250 on a cpu anyways.

this DOES suck though, i want an A64, when you look at the 3200+ VS the 3.0C, what do you think?

Yes, i have AIM, on it now, check my profile.
Work towards A64. much better deal and gets you ready for SOME future tech, e.g. 64bit apps... all to convince your dad

Get a 775 if your going with intel, wait till the 21st of this month, intel will release cpu's with 1066mhz fsb's and non intel chipsets will come out (Via and SiS) the guy above is an idiot for even suggesting 478.

As for pci-e (yeah its not pci-x... thats a different technology) its not neccesary, graphic cards havent used the max bandwidth availiable in agp4x let alone the need for something four times faster than that. Via I know for sure has a board with AGP and PCI-E. If you can wait a little longer till august 21st there is going to be price drops across the board for intels new chips.

Edit: As for 64bit chips, there really is no advantage over 32bit, your dad may hang this over your head for quite some time if you use it as a major point in the buy and cant show him a difference.

dont know if that was directed towards me or not but the only reason why i suggested the 478 was because i didnt know how much money he had to spend.

I beg to differ...
Put some AA/AF settings up and run at 1600x1200, and the latest cards use almost all bandwidht AGP8x has to offer...
Furthermore, compare A64 3000+ to an XP 3000+, and notice the huge gap in performance. And, it will help once WinXP 64-bit is out, then you could actually do more things, e.g. the 64bit optimized Photoshop and such.
Intel still sucks, dude. I dont reccomend buying a brand new CPU socket system for 2 reasons: price and youth. A64's are almost a year old, and we see how they've thrived. Now they are at reasonable prices. Let these new intels grow in performance while shrink in prices for a year. That's when all the PCI-E (x was for macs, right? sorry about that) and DDR2 mature.

ahhh, no need to start a war, i torn, i want an a64, but i will have ot go with intel.

as if right there are no pcie solutions?

No PCI-E for Athlon64 754's, but about to surface for 939's.
I'm saying, do all you can to convince your dad for an A64. Much more bang for bucks.

You just have defended all my points, if you are running a game in such a high resolution you are still not feeling any hit from AGP's maximum bandwidth, and any pci-e to agp comparison will show you the numbers.

An A64 is faster than a XP for a whole lot of reasons, but 64bit's isnt one of them, a 64bit chip can access a max of 8gb of memory (vs a 32bit chips 4gb) and can process 64bit floating point numbers, which just means more accuracy, but programmers dont use 32bit precision, let alone 64bit.

Windows 64bit wont magically make your computer faster.

I know the a64 is a faster chip, but it has a dim future with socket 939 looming ahead, same thing as the 478, there will be no future upgrade short of replacing the motherboard. And lga775 will be here for at least two years to come. And is priced at the same levels as an 478 chip.

So why would you buy an 478?

YOU SHOULDNT BUY a 478, I know, nor should you buy PCI-E! I'm saying Buy an A64 754 because this tier of computer technology is at its peak, when the prices are lowest and the tier is at its best performance. Good enough to hold you through for another 2-3 years without bankrupting you.

You might just wait and see how the 775 chips do for Intel if you want to go that route. A64's are good also, but if your going extreme overclocking then intel still is the best. The 775 right now is having too many problems with the boards undervolting the NB and causing major overclocking issues. Supposed to be fixed, but we'll see. Do as Lord of Shadows said and wait. The chipsets by VIA and SIS may have the same issues but we won't know till reviewers get them in hand. 775 is still too early to jump on, just give it till next month and make your decision. And Lord its uncalled for to call someone an idiot. There are major problems with 775 right now and 875chipset still runs pretty well if the guy can't convince his dad to go AMD. You can give your opinion without agreeing with someone, I both agree and disagree with your points but you don't see me bashin u.

PS... if your going A64... think hard about the 3500+ or 3800+ if u can afford. Dual channel memory is nothing to pass up.. especially corsairs new XL series. Run 1GB @ 2-2-2-5 on a dual channel A64... talk about a nice PC.

I know, it was, just get bothered when people spread ignorance. I like your passive-aggressive condescending tone though. =)

[it was towards berzerker btw, didnt notice acascianelli's post]

my dad is such a back stabbing fucker lol.

he was selling my computer, and now he says im on the computer too much and he doesnt want to buy me one at all...

wTF man, now im mad.

so you think i should go with the new A64's?

Wow that sounds like my dad. He wouldn't get DSL cuz it was "too expensive" and when we finally got it last week, he informs me he can write it off as a business expense anyway. WTF!

If you are getting a whole new system, there is nothing better than an A64 939. Intel has a bead on the future technologies, but their cpu's are not a match for the amd's, and it will take at least another 6 months for the new stuff to mature and be tried and true.

The only problems are the inflated prices on almost all of the newer hardware, especially gpu's and the new 939 amd's.

Are you getting the $$ from your old computer getting sold?

My dad wanted me to give him my rig (in the sig) when I buy a new system later this year, and I said bullshit I spent over $2k on this and perfected it so you can get it for free?

Now I should get $600 for it ;)

Ask your dad if he would rather have you spend your money on computers or drugs.

is ridiculous how he takes back what he says.

compared to some people the time i spend on the computer is mil.

he thinks im going to go shoot up my school or something.

whatever.

Get what you have the money for. If you can afford a nice dual channel setup and dual channel ram... go for it. If not, wait and see how the new 775's are going to be with the new chipset. If all else fails, result to 875 chipset and a p4. Mainly depends on spending funds though. I'd just say get a 3800+ and 1GB of PC3200XL... but that tends to get a bit pricy.

You may need to talk to someone about your problems. You seem..... angry.

yeah, im not sure about you, but woudlnt you be angry if your dad takes away your hobby?

heh

chill dude, fathers are usually like that. My dad does that shit, but then in the evening when im falling asleep he comes and says he was sorry for being so mean... does yours?
BTW, im 17 years old, hah

If it makes you any happier, my dad just got home from work and we ordered $1400 of comp parts. here they are:

AMD Athlon64 3200+, 2.0 ghz, 1mb L2 Cache, 200 mhz fsb
Abit KV8 Pro Motherboard (VIA K8T800 Pro chipset, 1ghz HyperTransfer)
Visiontek Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition, 256mb DDR3, 520mhz core
1024mb Corsair TwinX DDR500 PC4000 ram = 50mhz on FSB for overclock
Koolance Exos liquid cooling unit = self contained
Koolance CPU-300-H06 proc block = 100% copper w/ 24k gold contact
Koolance GPU-180-L06 vid block = 100% copper w/ 24k gold contact

That's what you should do with the money you get from it... can't go wrong.

<laid back-aggressive, not to be mistaken for passive aggressive>

first of as mentioned, thats not acceptable
second, the search feature works :p
(not that appearantly anyone but me actually uses it)

leading to > the 11th Commandment
thou shall not get caught :p

a little tough sometimes seeing how you need to edit your own post,
and get the rest of the folks who qouted it to do the same

you seem reasonably contrite, and appearantly there are no hard feelings
so you slide, but we are very serious about curbing overly aggressive extroverts
such as yourself
need to create a nice freindly environment to entice the introverts ;)

i don't see how this would make him feel better...he's not getting a new computer and now you're rubbing new computer parts in his face...im not too sure about him but he seems pretty angry already and this would only make him jealous. i know it would to me

Honestly, a 478 will not be too bad right now. The LGA 775 sockets are not perfected yet, and are still expensive as hell. If you must buy intel, 478 will be the way to go for now, and you can get a 3.0 for around 200 dollars. Not a bad investment to hold you over until you can get an AMD system, or upgrade to LGA once it becomes cheaper. No flaming! :p

By the way, I feel your pain. My dad does the same crap, but not as badly. I really feel sorry for you, since he sold your old computer and won't let you get a new one. I know I probably spend way more time than you on it. Don't worry about it. Have a civil conversation, don't be challenging, just ask him if you could please buy another computer because you enjoy it and it's something fun to do that keeps you out of trouble. I'm sure that if you talk to him, you'll reach a compromise that will leave both of you more or less pleased. Good luck.

Also, by way of trying to convince him to go AMD, pull up HardOCP's CPU reviews and show him the bandwidth of the new AMD's compared to the Intels, but ignore the EE procs that are 1000 dollars. Most of the AMD's will beat the crap out of a comparable intel. Then, pull up www.newegg.com and show him the price on an AMD. He can hardly say no. Go AGP. PCI-E is not necessary. Yet. :)

and try washing and detailing his car too :p

guilt trips go both ways ;)

haha, i would wash his car, but we own a full service car wash...

thanks for the idea.

btw, i dont mind ppl posting their specs, contrats to you, i was sposed to have that same CPU.....

I have to worry about my mom. She made me quit gaming!!!!! Cuz i spent too much time doing that. Ive never been in a school fight, but nooo. Argh! ITs still a sore subject. She gave me a lecture, then I went into the computer and started playing like 2 minutes later.

So I guess my all A's report card isn't good enough, and I need to study more and stay at work untill midnight. Ya! Well, i could have gotten A+'s.

Just a rant.

Go with a64 if ya have the dough... however the 478 aint nothin to scoff at niether (nice use of triple negative).

Buy your own computer??

I hate seeing kids talk shit about there fathers when it has to do with computers etc.

Yup, he is putting a roof over your head whether he is an Intel fanboy or not.

Nice point, Big Worm.
