Greetings,

I haven't been here in quite a while because I have been building our new home for the past 1 1/2 years and I apologize if I forget any etiquette.

I recently purchased a new Samsung 930B lcd monitor for my wife's system and she now needs a new video card to replace the Matrox (no DVI). I was thinking about replacing my card with something newer and giving her mine, but I'm not sure if the card I want will give me the gains it should given my system.

My current video card is an Asus v8460 Ti4600 (which was in my old system aka. her system) and I'm thinking about upgrading to a Sapphire x850xt. My system specs are as follows:

Asus p4p800-E Deluxe MB
Antec 480w psu
Intel 2.4GHz @ 3.2
1024 Kingston 1066 RDRAM
a bunch of other goodies

Would I see much of a gain with the AGP version of the x850xt?
Would I be better off keeping my v8460 and picking up a new card for her Asus p4t533-C? I'm an avid gamer when I have the time, but she only needs a DVI output card for "work related" software.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The x850xt would be overkill for your cpu. Better buy a cheaper card (x800xl or 6800gt) and upgrade the cpu as well.

edit: nevermind just saw that you were overclocked to 3.2. The xt should be fine and will give you significant performance gains over the 4600.
 
i would say go for a 6800gt

as it supports pixel shader 3.0 , ati can only do 2.0.

its not in a ton of games yet.. but its starting to be incorporated.
 
Go for an X800XL.

If you can find a 6800GT for cheap, go for it.


(Ignore the PS3.0 argument, its pointless on these cards)

hahaha, HAHAH his 3.2Ghz P4 is not enought CPU for a X850XT.. .lol

anywho... i say go for a 6800GT, the AGP cards can be had for under 300 now.. that owns everythign at that price...
