simple question really, having been out of the video card loop for a loooong time now, whats the best bang for my buck upgrade i can do to jump from a Geforce3 (standard) to whatever..

im looking at spending as little as possible, max £150 (~$275) and am willing to hunt around on ebay, fairs etc.. all i need to know is what card!

Dont' mind ati or nvidia, and incase it matters.. the rest of my system is a 2.4 P4 @ 3ghz, on an abit ic7, with 512mb ram, and 2x 80gb hdd, running xp

my current card isnt really stuggling atm, its being pushed along by the rest of my system, but id like to play doom3 and hl2 with reasonably nice looks :)

cheers for any help anyone can offer!

chris

$275 should put you in a 9800XT and very close to a 6800nu however I don't know what's available at what price in the UK. For US prices that is the 2 best cards I can think of.

edit- 9800XT's are still outrageously overpriced at $340+, I was thinking of the 9800pro 256mb.

yeah i am thinking of the 9800 pro region myself

im a little confused over the nvidia numbering system they now use..

what the equivelent to the 9800pro, and whats the best out at the moment

also, what are the ones to avoid at all costs!!

Asus V9950GE GeForce FX 5900 128MB DDR for £120 seems to be a steal, but are they any good :O

for $275, you should scrap up just a tad more for the 6800 128MB card since it beats all previous gen cards including the 9800 XT 256MB.

Yes, I agree...but we still don't know what kind of prices the 9800pro and the 6800nu go for in the UK.

cheapest 6800 128mb i could find is about £197 just too much :(

out of the 9800pro and the 5900 which should i go for.. who won that generation?

is a 5900 better or worse then a 5900xt ?

cheers!

Is that a 5900nu or a 5900Ultra? In either case they come out even (that is the 9800pro vs. 5900ultra) I would say anyways. But if you want to play D3 either of these cards will help you out as for HL2 its to hard to tell espically if the leaked beta, alpha, whatever it was is any indication of what the nv30 (5x00 series of cards) will perform like on HL2.

it was just a standard 6800

iv orderd a 9800pro now anyway :)

got an MSI one, supposedly with an xt core.. but anythign is better then my gf3 which is starting to cry...

cheers!
