I'm sure this means the death of this drive. However the ticking goes away once it is accessed. It is a 10.1GB WD HDD. Nothing special and nothing new. It's just an old drive that I use for backups and misc files I download..etc. However, I have it in a removeable drive bay and it just started making this noise. Is this a symptom of a drive finally giving up the ghost or is my removeable drive bay a possible culprit?

Plus I'd like to be able to identify this issue if it starts happening to any of my oter drives so I can save ay data before it dies.



Lastly, is an external usb hdd enclosure hard on the drives. I have a decent 80GB 8MB cache drive that I use in an external enclosure and was wondering if these devices cause shortened lifespan of the drives or not....any experience with that?
 
The only thing I would worry about on an external enclosure is the quality of the power supplied to the drive. If you take it on the road, you'll plug it into an outlet that has god knows what coming out of it, and is impractical at best to pack proper power proection while on the go. I would expect that alone to shorten the lifespan of the drive. However, I can't think of any factors that are specifically the fault of the enclosure per se.
 
Thanks, Doug. I always use power surge protectors even on the go .

As for the click tick sound. I saw something in the FAQ that I overlooked previous to my posting that mentioned that the it could be faulty power from a removeable drive bay or that it is just about to die. I'll try the drive hooked up directly to an ide cable rather than through the drive tray and see if it goes away. If not, I'll have myself a nice paperweight.!
 
My new WD 300gb did that and it failed S.M.A.R.T. tests across the board. Yours is probably on its way out. RIP
 
Click usually means the controller has died. It's 10 GB. Deep 6 it.

Welcome to the world of *click* *click* *tick* WD. They are infamous for that. That is how they go on oh so many occasions. Soon it will stop working altogether. They also love corrupting the data so badly on the drive that you can't even low level format it. That's their number one problem.

Time to go out and get a new drive guy.
