Ti4600/9600 XT Question....

Hiya All. I was wondering if I made a mistake here...

I have a Ti4600 in my 2500+ box right now, I picked up a 9600XT, my question is did I take a step backwards? If I did, how so?

You may get lower frame rates in certain older games. You should notice an improvement in DX8.1 and later games, in both quality and speed.

Overclock the sucker!
 
You took about a step sideways depending on the game. In 3dMark2001 you'll probably get a similar score depending on the drivers.

In most games you'll get similar FPS unless you use 4xAA & 8AF then you MIGHT have higher fps with the 9600XT.

In some very new DX9 games your frame rates will probably be lower, but look better b/c you can use all of the fancy DX9 features.

Where with the ti4600 you would default to DX8 path and get more fps.

If you had asked before you bought, I would have said HELL NO dont "upgrade" to any middle range card from what you have.

I would have only upgraded to a high end card like:
9700Pro, 9800NP, 9800Pro+ OR
5900SE, 5900np, 5900U/XT
 
I was in a similar quandry, and chimed in about it in another thread. You know, "blah blah... I'm also thinking of returning mine." However after putting a bit of Rage3D Tweaker to it and really giving it a closer look over the last two days I've decided it is a good card to hold onto. The main reason is image quality and to get a better ATI card I'd have to shell out $100 more US greenbacks.

Just to confuse the issue, you can go out right now and buy a BFG 5900 for the same price as a made by ATI 9600XT and get more fps and much higher bench scores, but there's something about ATIs colors and crispness (and HL2 serial number) that make the 9600XT a nifty midrange card.

Getting back to your question now. Yes you went in the right direction unless you want give up a little (very little) image quality for 5900 horsepower. I bought both cards myself and have no regrets with either of them.

I don't know what you are basing your information on, but I doubt it is personal experience.

The 9600XT may only get similar framrates/score with 3Dmark 2k1 as the 4x00 series. They kicked at that... damn fine NV silicon. The 9600XT will do more than a playable job at any of these, however... and do it at 2x, 4x or 6x FSAA and 16x AF and kick the crap out of the 4x00 series.

I believe he took a good step, provided he is not looking soley at framrates. Look to NV for that-- but be prepared to sacrifice *some* visual quality.

BTW, your 5900 card is an excellent buy, bro... at Fry's for $199. Not going to dispute that.

Whoa!

I installed the card, what a jump in image quality!

But I have 2 questions....

1. My games are defaulting to 60Hz, I usually play in 85Hz, why?

2. I understand the Overdrive thing, but is there a way I can control/overclock the settings to my tastes?

overclock as usual, just disable overdrive. The iq is so much better, and youll really notice it when you turn on eye candy. Your 4600 couldnt handle 4xaa8xaf for most thinks on the market.. your 9600 will.
 
Not sure about this, but i think anything over 2x AA/8x AF would give that XT more than it can handle at decent framerates (40+) YMMV but I get hickups on ut2k3 at 10x7 with 4X/16X and anything res higher than that in a demanding game kills my card
 
I can disable the overdrive, but I don't see any sliders for the core/mem speeds.

Also I am reading about these Omega/DNA drivers. Are these any better than the stock ones off ATI's web site?

I just finished playing some Call of Duty...Looks so much better, I have everything set at max.

you need a 3rd party utility to overclock ati cards. Wizzard has made one that you can find right here in this forum. Some people like the omega/dna drivers, I personally dont use them as I take more of an if its not broke dont fix it mentality towards the drivers. Theyre plenty fast and I have no issues with them.

like everybody else is saying it is a huge upgrade with regard to visual quality, with regard to raw speed it is more of a lateral move. However I think that it is a smart move nonetheless.

Now go sell your TI4600 for $100 on the forums and you are all set.
 
The 9600 is not a framrate pig... it will not bench as high as the 4x00 series on 3dmark 2k1.

It will kick ass with FSAA/AF on, and will still have good framerates... once you have a taste of qualty, you will never go back.
