ti4200 + problem only with counter-strike...

long story short....
i thought my video card was bad so i bought a new one and it messed up my video card drivers. My computer was rebooting itself and the screen would get shaky in the bottom corner sometimes and the only way to get it back and running right was to take out ehe video card and then start it up shut off, then put the video card back in and all would be fine.

so, i got a new video card but that didnt seem to fix the problem, acctually i couldnt really ever get the new video card to boot up in anything other than safe mode.

I put my old video card back in today and it started up fine. I installed nVIDA driver 66.93 and set everything back up the way it was before. i ran reforce as well. When i start counter-strike though, as soon as it gets to the opening page my scrren goes black and it says "sync out of range" and i just have to shut down.

Am i just using the wrong driver or what? i read somewhere that if the refresh rate is to high the monitor could do this, but im not using anything diffrent than before except the 66.93 driver. i have NO idea what driver i was using previous.

any ideas? i took my memory and had it tested out, it checked out fine.
 
follow the sticky on the vid card forum to completely erase the drivers and reinstall, do it for all your drivers, vid card and otherwise. Get rid of them all just to be safe, update them and if that doesn't help...

the problem is that im not really sure what drivers to install. i did a "performance tune up" with sandra and it said both my system bios and video card bios <4.25.00.30> were old too.


i want to update both, but im kinda unsure about exactly what bios versions i should try for both. And, im not comfortable enough to just be randomly picking and choseing a bois version without a little guidance first. :)

so, should it be working fine with the 66.93 driver?

or should i use an older one like 40.41?

The card is a few years old
 
I dont know which driver to use, but the theory is to use the last/best non-beta driver released while your card was still top of the line because they were still optimizing for it back then.

Just update the bios to the newest non-beta bios's that are out. They are tested and guarenteed to work without bugs like beta bios's.

Course nothign is guarenteed so, have fun.

66.93 driver will work fine, I have a 4600 running with it now
I'm pretty sure the whole geforce line uses the same driver package.
And positive on the 4XXX series...

I'd do what CleanSlate recommended and use drivercleaner before installing the new card and see if that works.
 
well, maybe it is my video card thats bad. I did the disk cleaner and reinstalled everything. when my refresh rate is at 60 all seems fine. when i put it up to 85 it started to get shaky in the bottom left corner again so i put it back at 60.

the obvious tells me that the video card is starting to go bad now and that it kept going "sync out of range" in CS because the refresh rate was just to high for it to handle and it shut it down to protect it?
 
for whatever reason ive always ran the 45.23 drivers not sure why..but they work good.
 
If you're running an LCD off the vidcard (especially in DVI) 60hz is all you can do.
 
I also have a TI 4200 and everytime I tried to play cd it freezes on me. At first I could play cs 1.5 just fine then I updated to 1.6 that's where the problem started to kick in so I uninstall 1.6 and roll back to 1.5 but it didn't fix the problem.
 
well, i have a CRT not a LCD, and like i said... before i ran 85 all the time without any problems. Last night i was able to play CS in openGL mode but i could only get 60 fps where im normally at 100fps.
usually i need to run ReForce before it will let me hit 100fps anyways and i didnt run it yet. It just seems to me like the card is starting to go and i dont wanna try and push it untill i can figure out if its the card or something else. at least im better off today thatn i was yesterday :)

when i first bought the card after about a month it started doing that <back in CS 1.3>, freezing, locking up, BSoD, everything but only during CS. i just RMA it through Gainward and all has been good untill now. how long have you had the card?
 
out of sync means you are running the card at a resolution or refresh rate that is above what your monitor supports, do you have the correct monitor driver installed? Just a thought....
 
Sounds like your monitor might be going bad. Try a different vid card and see if it'll do 85hz (I doubt it will).

I bought my card through Ebay so I haave no clue.
