Ti4200 ---> 9700Pro/9800Pro

I'm using a 128MB Ti4200 now and have the oppurtunity to get these:

ATi 9700Pro - RM590 (~US$155)
ATi 9800Pro - RM900 (~US$235)

Will I get a huge performance boost in today's and future games by getting a 9700Pro? ANd is the difference between the 9700Pro and 9800Pro worth the extra cash?

This deal is only on for a couple more days, so I'd really appreciate a quick reply. THanks alot! :D
 
My 4400ti 128MB card was overclocked to the max (stock cooling though) and my 9800 is so far ahead it's sad. Very sad. They are not in the same league.

The 9700 would be a good buy too, I think. It's a great card.
 
I went from an Asus V8420 Ti4200 128mb to a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, and hot damn what a difference.

So, SO worth it.

3D Mark 03 with Ti4200: 1950
3D Mark 03 with 9800 Pro: 5890
 
You guys may have also talked me into upgrading my ti4200... I've had my eye in that 9800pro for a while, and my girlfriend needs a card for her gaming rig that's going to get built soon... A ti4200 would be perfect for her :D

So you're saying I should get a 9800pro instead of the cheaper 9700pro?

Is the diff between the 9800 and 9700 that big?
 
Yeah, I'd go with the 9700 pro. I'm looking at benchmarks at the moment, and it seems the 9800 pro only gets about 10 more frames per second than the 9800 pro. About 100 vs. 110 FPS. These are UT 2003 benchmarks, btw. Not worth 10 FPS if you ask me :p
 
Hrm yeah I noticed that even HardOCP's review of the 9800Pro had it about 10-30fps infront of the 9700Pro in most of the new games.

Or maybe I should keep my Ti4200 until the new tech comes in? Darn I'm so confused. :D
 
well, I got a 9800pro the other day to replace my Ti4200...believe it or not it's not in my system yet.... I gotta pop the packaging on that thing and throw some benchies at it
 
btw, the 9800pro can be found for cheaper than you have it up there.... just so you know, mine was 300 CAD.... should be able to find it for like 20-30 bucks or so cheaper in the states

Rotfl you know that 3dmark2k3 is reducing score of ti for not supporting Dx9? R9600np on A XP 1600+ has 2300 points in 3dmark2003 but i think I'd rather have ti4200 than 9600np:D

without AA and AF enableb ti4200 is close to 9700np, with AA and AF radeon will be much faster. So the upgrade will give you a lot in terms of image quality but speed gains will not be that big.
 
Go with the 9700 Pro. There isn't really a whole lot of difference in speeds between the 2. Least not $80 worth. It won't hurt as bad when you do upgrade to the newer stuff down the road.

If you wait for new hardware, you will keep wiating. Get it now and get the use out of it with the better performance and enjoy the experience more with the 9700 now.
 
Also keep in mind that with directx8 games, the 4200 is going to be almost as fast if you're not using antialiasing. Turn on antialiasing and ansio filtering and it's a different story, but otherwise you're only looking at an incremental change.

So it depends on what you're playing.

If you want high benchmark numbers, get the 9800. If you play DX9 games, get the 9800. If you use older games but demand antialiasing and ansio filtering, get the 9800. But if you're mostly playing older games and don't think you want FSAA or ansio, then your 4200 may be all you really need at this point.

I'm sticking with my 4200 because I usually only play racing games and flightsims, and with those DX8 games I play, framerate is more important than ansio or FSAA so going to a new card isn't going to be worth the money to me. The next generation of cards though... That will probably be enough to make me want to upgrade. Not now though, because I'm already beyond my screen refresh rate (85) most of the time.
 
Well, the point of getting a 9800p/9700p is so I can play at my LCD's native res of 1280x1024 with some aniso/AA turned on. :D
 
Lol, yes.. the 9700pro will blow it away like a new world.. and the 9800 is so much better its in a new league... definitly get the 9800 pro, i have two of them and they rock ... i had a TI4400 before and a 9700pro.. nothing compares to the 9800pro

If your games run fine now and you don't care about benchmarks, then keep your current card, although you did say your gf needs a card. Right now is a great time to buy a 9800 pro, although all depending on when you need a card for your gf you could just wait for the next series of cards, but keep in mind you will pay for the next series of cards.

I HAVE noticed a lot of speed gains, though.

In ut2k4, I could not play at 1280x1024 (native lcd res) with a high enough framerate to never notice slowdowns. I can now. I can also crank AA and AF to the max and still not notice any slowdowns.

Not to mention the improvements that I've seen in BF1942, CoD, FarCry, Mech4 Mercenaries and Enemy Territory.

It WAS worth it and I got a HUGE speed gain.

Also, the score increase was also huge in 3DMark 2001SE. I gained 6000 points.
 
Yeah but that was with 9800pro while i was saying it's close to 9700np (that's a bit of diffrence now isn't it)
