Thunderbird not getting to Gmail.

I just bought a new Macbook and am LOVING this machine. I have had only two problems so far. the first:

Thunderbird: It isn't connecting properly to my Gmail at all. I get time out messages and such. I now I have the POP and stmp addresses correct. Anyone have any advice.

Printer / Scanner: I have an HP 1300 all in one scanner/printer and the Mac is having problems printing to it and it wont even see the scanner. The printer is connected to my windows box and is shared over the network.

make sure that:
your pop address is pop.gmail.com (port 995)
you use SSL secure connection (no secure authentication)

that should do it. i had the same problem with thunderbird and gmail, and i think the above should fix your problem. glad to see you love the macbook.
