Early this morning I ordered an i5 2500k that was on sale @ Newegg.
Late this evening I found out that I won a 1090T in a contest I was entered in.
The 1090T will work in my present motherboard & I have a P67 motherboard awaiting the arrival of my 2500k.
Now I have the tough decision of which to keep. I was planning on selling the motherboard & cpu of my current rig, but now I don't know whether to return the 2500k & sell the motherboard or keep the motherboard from my current rig & drop the 1090T in it.
How much of a performance difference is there between the 2500k & the 1090T?
Oh...I forgot...i'm gonna overclock the snot out of whichever I choose. :)
 
2500k will overclock much higher. Costs of going to the 2500k is much higher, but if you don't mind the cost, go with the 2500k. From what I've seen, in a single-threaded application, a 3.3 ghz sandy bridge is approximately equivalent to a 4ghz Phenom II. And the 1090T will max out around 4.2 ghz, while sandy bridge if you're lucky will hit 5ghz, and typically hits at least 4.5.
 
Go sandy bridge. There's no question. I've got an 1100t sitting in its original box because i was in the same predicament. My old rig had an OC'd 1055t @ 3.5/4.1... SB destroys it in most apps that matter, especially when OC'd.
 
As a longtime AMD fanboy, this hurts to say but there is no competition between a 2500K and anything AMD. There may be some thread heavy applications out there that'll use 6 cores better but for 99% of stuff, that Intel will run rings around that X6.
