Well, I finally succumbed to temptation:

Haven't got to play with it much yet but wow is it fast! I thought the D2 could blast the frames but this one is crazy!

The nice thing is they all have almost identical layouts. The buttons are in the same locations and the menus are only slightly different.

One can never have enough pro bodies :p

Want to trade my markIII with it???? :D The D3 is sure something special about it.....

What happened to the x? Too much $? :p You have a nice "matched" trio here. You already took nice photos. Did you really need a full frame camera?

I TOLD YA YOU'D GET ONE! =) I'm saving up now, my next camera will be whatever follows up the D3 with video. And then REALLY saving for the 200-400 or a super tele.

This thread is useless without pictures! From the camera not of it!

What's the tabletop tripod you are using?

The D3X has lower pixel density than the D2X and not enough of an ISO/DR increase to make it worth the huge pricetag, IMO.

I don't really care about the "full frame" view, it is those huge photosites I wanted! At its base ISO, the images from the D2X are second to none but quickly get noisy as you increase the gain. I've been playing with the D3 and at 6400 it is no more noisy than the D2X at 400 (that is four more stops for anyone counting). That said though, the D2X will remain as my main body that I'll use for insects and wildlife (due to its ability to put pixels on the target) and the D3 will be used for everything else.

Quiet you :p Besides, had I listened I would not have that second D2X

Meh, I could care less about video. Its like the Liveview. I figured out how to use it and now doubt if I'll ever use that setting again.

200-400 is an awesome lens but keep in mind how heavy it is.

The image of the D3 box was taken with the D3 :D - check the settings in the EXIF

The "tabletop" tripod is an RRS TP243 groundpod

I had a D700 for a little while. I didn't find ISO 6400 usable. All in all not a worthy upgrade for me from my D300. Yeah if we need reach, more pixel density matters. That's why I kept my D300. There's no way I'm going to spend more $ on a larger telephoto. 300mm is my max. I'm going to wait out a round or two in the Nikon camp. Decided to get a 5D II instead and am loving the extra megapixels.

Picture_s_! =)

200-400 would be monopod only for sports and birding, not hand held. I use RRS heads, will look into the groundpod thanks!

Man I thought the RRS heads were expensive, that groundpod is nearly $400! It would be perfect for macro and field shooting I'm sure but the glass is gonna have to come long before that guy will for me. Will keep my eye out for a used one on FM tho!

Yeah, but considering that the pod is supposed to be able to support a 500L and a 1d series body. You are looking at 22lb+. That may be an overkill for anything lighter.

How about an 800mm and a D2X?

It is rock-solid. One impressive little tripod.

The specs page says its RATED for 50 pounds but will handle much more. Very impressive. But still, $400 when I need glass means it goes to the back of the line on the wish list.

How's the 800 do with TCs, and do you ever find you would need them? I'd love to do some moon shots some day with one...

I've modified the TCs to work with the 800 but haven't actually used it that way yet.

Actually, the 800 earned a little more support this year with a Lens Support Package from RRS. From testing it on some ducks down at the lake it works very well. I was able to get sharp images as low as 1/100 - much lower than previously.
