Thoughts on this Raid Card for Raid 5?

That is not raid5. Its raid 0, 1, or 10 the same that you should have on your BIOS. Paired with 4 of those drives you will have 4TB of storage or 3.63 TiB.

A real hardware raid 5 card with BBU (needed for write performance) will cost > $400 on newegg.

I would not bother with HW raid for media especially since RAID does not remove the need for a backup. RAID is for guaranteed uptime not really for preventing data loss. If the media is irreplaceable use individual drives and make a backup.

The media is very much replaceable... its just movies and tv shows.

It is my time that I am taking to rip, encode and such.

Excuse my ignorance, I didn't catch that it wasn't RAID 5.

Anyone have some recommendations of back up structure?

It seems most people say avoid the headache of RAID as the harddrives these days with SMART technology and a backup is just as good.

Should I back up to one external, two? Can I automate this? What about just having two harddrives with the exact same data in the tower?

Yes, Yes, Maybe. If you could do it in two separate towers, that's better.... a power surge could cook both drives and you would be back to reripping dvd's and the like.

Two inexpensive servers connected with gigabit Ethernet, with independent UPS. Or External backups that stay unplugged unless in use. Lots of cool programs that do incremental backups for your data.
