thoughts on heatpipe cooling???

what are your guys thought on heatpipe cooling vs plain old heatsink/fan cooling?

at first look id think that if there is no airflow blowing on the cpu directly it would cause overheating easy, but people who have heatpipe coolers seem to like them

do any of you guys have heatpipe cooling and if so what is your experience vs traditional fan coolers?:confused:
 
Heatpipes are based on phase change. A phase change requires a significant amount of energy, therefore when using phase change cooling you are able to extract more energy (heat, in this case) from the CPU. Heat pipe tech is where its at, for air cooling solutions.

For a phase change to occur, (liquid to gas, in most heat pipe based heatsinks), you take the heat energy being produced from the CPU, and vaporize the liquid (requires substantial heat). It then flows as a vapor, up the center of the heat pipe...to the fins which is a condensor...with air passing over it. The air passing over it pulls heat out of the vapor....enough so that it condenses back into liquid...and then travels back down the outer portion of the pipe (known as the wick) as a liquid...back to the heat source (CPU)...and the process repeats.

Almost all aftermarket CPU and GPU coolers are based on heat pipe technology, mainly because it takes far more energy to change phase...while being fairly easy to dump the heat elsewhere (the condensor + fan). This is why heatpipes work so much better than typical fins + fans. Instead of conduction + convection, you have conduction + phase change + convection. Almost all of the latest cooling solutions are heatpipe now, at least for CPU's. Another thing it does is make it easier for your airflow to flow from front to back (or back to front, back to top, etc) making the flow of cool air to your heatsink more efficient. With old style coolers like the Zalman CNPS 7700 or the Blue Orb the air flows straight down at the mobo and recirculates in the case. This may help cool down some of the chipsets but isnt' as effective at cooling the CPU. Most heatpipe solutions allows air to flow parallel to the mobo which delivers more cool air to the heatsink.
