I'm thinking of picking up Battletech (or putting it on the Christmas list) and was wondering if any of you had opinions or feedback about the game. X-com + MechCommander doesn't sound like a bad time at all.

There is a whole thread of people's thoughts on it. That said, it is a pretty good game. It isn't a triple A title, but it's fun and it has some decent replay value. It isn't on par with X-COM or X-COM 2 if that is what you are wondering. Some of it gets pretty repetitive and some strategies seem to work a lot better than others (like using mostly LRMs), but still fun.
 
I would rather the new title mutant hero zero. I have BattleTech and it is very clunky on the ui side
 
I thoroughly enjoy playing battletech and feel it offers a refreshing take on the series. I don't feel the UI is clunky but rather intuitive.
