Ok here is my story, I am sure TimothyB, BBgun etc. can extend on this as well. I have most of the 73 plus pages of the 2005fpw thread. I received my Dell 2005 fpw on the Feb. 26th. I ordered the 21st and it shipped out the 23rd. After about a week with the monitor I decied that there was a little spot in the lower left corner that somewhat bothered me under low light conditions.

Here is a picture:

I debated and I thought that if I was even questioning it I should probably send it back. Yea it had no dead pixels, but I was not going to be at conflict with myself. Besides a few people (morfinx) have dam near perfect screens.

On March 2nd I called Dell and talked to a person named Steve after a email I sent on Feb 28th went unanswered for 2 days. I told him that I wanted to return the montior because of the leakage. He set up a replacement and assured me the new one would be defect free. He even went so far as to promise. I had been through Dell hell with my laptop last year where they flat out lied and charged my credit card a different amount than what they quoted me on the phone. This led to overcharged, but that is a long and different story.

Anyways Steve told me to write the Ref. number on the box and said he would arrange for UPS to pick up the monitor. He told me UPS would call me. Since it was towards the end of the week Steve said that the monitor could take 3-5 to ship. I asked why it would not be overnighted? I told him I was not going to waste my 21 day trial waiting for a replacement that I may never get a chance to send back. He just said, You have 21 days from when you receive the monitor...did not answer my question. At the end I asked for customer ID and asked for an email. The email I was promised never sent.

A day later I chatted with a person online about my monitor status because nothing was on the website. The online rep. told me that it could take 7-10 days and would not answer my question about why I would have to wait to get my monitor...and the 21 day trail being wasted. Finally when I asked if they even had the monitor in stock, did she answer with, "your case may be an exception" BEWARE THE 2005FPW AND 2405FPW ARE IN LOW STOCK AT THE MOMENT.

Well on March 7th I called Dell back to talk to Steve about my monitor status. I now had a status page with a estimated ship date being March 14th! I was furious and most of all f**ked if this replacement did not work out. Well after the ID that Steve gave me went unverified, I spoke with an Austin. Austin was very straightforward. Nice guy, easy to understand. He said my monitor should be here on March 8th. So last night I got my replacement. Feb Rev. A01 which was what I had before, Feb Rev A01.

This took 10 mins to set up and come to a conclusion. Here are pictures. Sorry I did not get any in windows, because the dual screen setup for about 1 hour was extasy!! No dead pixels but something far worse. I will let you be the judge:

My replacement is on the right, original on the left.

What you see here is major backlighting the left corner. I thought my first one was bad. The replacement you can see the backlighting in the light. I had my neighbor in the dorms, who has a mac widescreen laptop and an LCD confirm this with me. Also I had some light leakage in the middle and major at the top right.

Now here is what I found interesting about these screens. I had been using my orignal 2005fpw for about 2-4 hours a day for the past week. If you compare the light leakage in the last picture to my orignal one(top of the thread) that I took last week when I got this monitor you will see the leakage sort of evened out. Now before people say tempertures, my replacement was closer to the window and it was 31 F tonight. My original one was hotter from what I felt when I took the last picture.

So I called Dell tonight and tried to speak with Austin. Invaild ID again. So I spoke to a Kathy, who was unsure what the problem with the monitor was. Nevertheless she was going to put in an exchange and assured me that the problem would be fix. I told her the last person promised that and my replacement was 3 times as bad. She said that Dell makes special arrangments if a customer complains about a problem more than once. Dell will look at the specfic problem and make sure it is fixed. I did not believe this and after she came back on the phone and told me that they were low stock and a replacement may take 5-7 days, I called it quits.

I explained to her that I did not want to get a replacement far worse and not have any time to do anything because of the 21 days. I asked her if I could keep my original. I was surpised when she said sure just put the replacement in the box and ship it back.

So here is what I conclude for these people debating about sending their 2005fpw back:

1. If you have it in more than one corner send it back.
2. If you can see the backlighting in a lighted room send it back.
3. If you have to question yourself send it back. While their was some hassle, it was not as bad as I had experienced perviously with Dell.
4. Have major dead pixel problems.

If you have simulate an actual blank screen and stare at your screen to notice it, chances are it will even out depending on how many areas of the screen it is on. This is what Ajaabar suggested and seeing my replacement, my backlighting was a non issue.

In closing I ask for people NOT to respond by saying, "why dont you just get an 2405?" While this is one solution, I can come up with a list of reasons why I chose the 2005 over the 2405. Actually here is one easy one. College+no job-some savings=2005. That is it. I hope this helps anyone on the verge of sending back a Dell monitor. My orignal pixel free back light recovery 2005 is the best money I have spent. Like someone suggest, sorry worrying and ENJOY THE F ING MONITOR!!!

UPDATE 6/3/05: My FEB Rev A01 just developed numerous stuck pixels of different colors. Very noticeble wihout Dead pixel buddy. Around 50 I would say. Too bad it is really hard to take pictures of these. Well I called dell the other night and the process for getting another one went smooth. Just explained to the tech and 15 minutes he had a replacement shipping.

Today I recieved a refurbished Jan A01. I thought "great this is going to go back". To my amazement when I set her up there was no stuck pixels and the backlight was actually better than my Feb A01. Maybe I should not count my chickens before they hatch because you never know if this one might kick the bucket, but I try not to think that way.

I am happy as hell and here are some pictures for you guys to compare. These pictures should be better as I got a Sony P200 to replace my 3 year old Kodak.

damn dude......that sucks you had to go through with that. I can't believe they would look at the specific problem if you complain more than once. that's bs.

Just out of curiosity does the 2001FP have these same back lighting issues?

What I got out of this post was:

1) Dell employees lie to you with a straight face (which I already knew)
2) Their monitors suck

Anyway, what are you going to do if the next replacement is just as bad? What CAN you do? Seems like you're kind of stuck now... :(

Mine did not. It is flawless in just about every way I could want.
Best computer investment I've ever made.

Yes it does kinda suck, but my mind is at ease knowing that I was not stuck with my replacement. I agree that they would not look at the problem, that is why I did not want to play the return game and end up being stuck with something that was far worst.

Yes they lie which is BS, I agree with you there. While you think their monitors suck, that is your own opinion. Lots of people own Dell montiors on this board and are quite happy with them. True there has been some quality issues, but if you look hard enough on this board you will find problems with the HP 23 inch monitor as well as some Sony panels that cost twice as much as the Dell.

If you read the end of my original post you will see that I am keeping what I had originally. If you look at the pictures I am quite surpised by the backlight fading on my original one. The point of my post was give a warning to those with the backlighting. Often times what you think is really an issue ends up being a non issue. I have pictures, just look at the replacement on the right....horrible.....you could see the leakage in board daylight, and I thought I had severe backlighting.

I believe the 2005 is the first one to actually have serious back lighting issues.

I received my replacement panel today. So far, so good. I'll really know tonight after its been running for 9-10 hours.

One thing worth mentioning, the STAND that came with it was defective, hahah. The button could NOT be depressed. If this one is, in fact, the keeper that I hope it is, I will be using my original stand.

PS: how do you know if its a refurb?

I had the same problem, along with lothers. If you tilt the screen all the way up (or down) and then try to press the button it will work.

Yep, that was the case.

Something I am noticing about this monitor is the space from the bezel to where the screen starts to actually display. When i've got some more time, I'll compare and contrast. If there is some issue with that, I'll probably just learn to live with it. If I've got a a leakless monitor, that sounds good enough.

your stand probably works. I had that problem and it was just a little stuck down. Hond the base and pull up on the monitor and the button will come free. anyways I sent mine back... now I have a 2405 which in my opinion is uncomparable to the 2005 bc it has NO PROBLEMS!!

Yep also want to mention that there is a button on the back of the monitor for removing it from the base.

Ash, could you take some pictures of your replacement in comparison to your orginal. Also dont forget to hook both up together before you send it back. It is well worth it just to see what 3300x1900 pixels is like:) Glad to here you got a go replacement. I am happy with my orignal and can barely even notice hte backlight anymore. From my pictures it seems to have faded so I know I have no gotten used to it.
