Hey guys,

I used to be a member here about 2 years ago, then I just stopped coming around I guess and my account was terminated. Still looks like the same old place though :D

Anyway, I've really never had this problem (at leas to the extend that I could not fix it) but I just built this machine a few months back.

MSI 848PV motherboard
Mushkin 768mb ddr
Maxtor 80GB 7200rpm HD
P4 3.2E w/ retail heatsink
400w PSU (dont remember which brand, but its not one of the cheapies)
ATI Radeon 9800 pro
Onboard audio and lan.


So heres the deal... this thing will freeze any chance it gets. Completely. I'm sure if it's a heat issue as the processor is running at 58c under load. I've tried additional case fans, etc, but I'm thinking as far as cooling I need a much beefier heatsink. I started out with a 300watt psu and it worked fine, but did this occasional freezing crap so I swapped it out with a new 400watter and it still does the same thing. I'm positive that its not a software (other than windows xp) issue because when I format and leave 0 software on there, it still freezes lots.

Is there some hardware incompatibility here that I'm not seeing? I was pretty sure that these should all play together fairly well. Even after I update to the latest drivers, it doesn't help a bit. I'm thinking heat, what about you guys? Whats the normal operating temp for that processor?

Based on the spec at intel here .your coming close to the thermal top, what kinda chassis are you using and what are the temps in there
 
Under what conditions does it freeze and do you get any error messages? Sometimes the conditions can be so disparate they appear random, but something will be triggering the problem... memory access, hard drive access, cpu load, etc.


Also, what is your system/case temperature? Have you tried removing/cleaning/reseating the processor heat sink?
 
I'm not by this machine right now, but i can get the temps later on. However, I have been running it lately with no side panel as it seems to be running cooler. (obviously)

I get no error messages at all, its just a complete and instant lockup. no symptoms beforehand or anything. I have noticed, though... that if I run the old quake3 timedemo for the time that it doesn't freeze, it comes up with a memory access error - but again, I dont know if thats a compatibility issue or bad RAM.

I did a little more research and I'd say they want you to be around 45c also PDF says on page 35 that at 135F or about 57C the unit will shut down..so your over then limit
 
Thank you for the excellent information. When you say the unit will shut down, you mean the processor will just stop itself causing the freeze that I am experiencing, right?

Try lowering your AGP to X4 or lower. I had freezing problems with my computer and I have a 9800 pro and lowering the AGP fixed it.
 
I would run memtest, also try running with only matched pairs of memory. The 3.2E requires memory be installed in pairs for maximum performance.

The temperature on the CPU does seem high, I'm suprised you haven't switched to a different thermal solution yet. I'd also make sure the heatsink and fan are properly installed, and maybe use a different thermal compound.
 
I've reseated the heatsink unit and even applied AS the second time around. Also, the motherboard doesn't allow the changing of the AGP speed, unfortunately. This was a thought that I had so I checked.

Thanks for the memory advice too, I guess since theres 768mb in there it's not a pair. :eek:

edit: about the ram: I just researched my order history and theres a 512mb stick and a 256mb stick. Would I be better off with just the 512mb?
 
I would purchase a pair of matched memory. 1GB should run ~$140, 512MB ~$80. That should probably help.

I run a 512 MB PC2700 module along with a 256 MB PC2100 from different manufacturers and never had a problem.. if you can - try uderclocking your CPU cause it sounds like a heat issue to me..
