A client whom I fix her computer for, has been having some issues such as AdAware freezing while scanning, Norton not loading up, etc. I figured a virus, so I attempt to run TrendMicro Housecall. Doesnt like that, it freezes up too. Get into safemode, and it's fine. However, it stops at a certain point in Safemode w/networking also!

I pulled out the HD and put it into my computer to scan it, and it comes up clean (with it freezing up at a certain file also).

Any clues here?
 
The harddrive could be Corrupt, or have a bad sector, or something along the lines of that... Or it could possibly be dying... and Unable to read that part or something?

Only other thing I can come up with that could be wrong.

Edit: Try a defrag with something other than the Windows Defrag tool... like Diskeeper.
 
I dont know if you guys noticed... But he used the HD and scanned it using his PC too, which he hasn't stated that it has any problems, and I doubt that the 2 computers have the exact same problem... being of completely diff. components etc...

But a vote to test the memory and PSU too, it cant hurt.
 
scannig the drive makes it work pretty hard which can make a future problem rear its head a little early. i'd back up her data and reccomend buying a new hd.
 
Head over to Hitachi Global Storage's website(www.hgst.com), and get their DFT (Drive Fitness Test)- It will work on all makes and models of hard drives, and is the best diagnostic tool that I have used for hard drives. Smells like a stinky hard drive to me.... this will tell you if it is..

Did you mean that it scanned fine, WITHOUT freezing up at a certain file, or that it scanned ok, BUT it froze at a certain file? A little confusing there. But yeah, generally, suspect moving parts first, solid-state components last. If you have a spare hard drive, maybe try cloning the original drive and then see if the system freezes when using the cloned drive.
