Man, I guess I'm having some bad luck or something. Copied some data to my new HDD and noticed it sounded louder than normal. Beyond Compare then was showing a lot of errors, and I ran CHKDSK and goot this:

Time to return the drive to NewEgg??
 
Hard to say, that just looks like a corrupted drive. Check the SMART data for remapped sectors, etc.
 
I'm not really sure what that means. Do I need a tool to check SMART data? Googling now...

So it says there are 200 reallocated sectors.
 
that chkdsk log just means the file system is broken. it doesn't tell you the cause. it could be any of the software or hardware involved. I hope for your sake you have a backup not attached to this system
 
This is a brand new drive. No data is stored on the disk that I care about, I'm just upgrading my 150GB VR to a 500GB VR beacause Steam.

I'll do a full format and try again with the copy. I'm using it through a USB dock (running things now that I didn't want to shut down and open my case for) but I'll just throw it in the case and do it via SATA instead. Maybe that was affecting things?

Its possible. It will go much faster directly through the controller on your motherboard anyways, so you should do that and see if you have any more issues.
 
I bet it is the USB dock. also, don't bother with a full format, it's really just a waste of time it doesnt actually do anything useful.

I would say just the opposite. A full format is essential these days to verify that the drive is functioning. A quick format to me says I do not care if I loose everything on the disk I just want to start writing data now..

Agreed. It says there are 0 bad sectors and no other problems with the drive. I would start by verifying the stability of the system over thinking the drive is DOA. It certainly does not look like the drive is the cause of the corruption.
 
If you think there is a problem with a drive, then NEVER base your assumptions on SMART data, filesystem errors or anything like that.

Seagate - download SeaTools and test your drive with it.
Western Digital - download Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows and test your drive with it.

If there is something wrong with your drive, it will say so. If not, then you can't RMA it anyway, as report from one of these tools is usually required by manufacturer/distributor to accept the RMA at all.
 
Alright so everything checked out okay, I'm using RichCopy this time (instead of the default windows copy mechanism) and I'll check again with Beyond Compare when finished.
