this may sound daft, but....

i have always been an nvidia man and my rig is an sli setup. 2x6800gts on an asus a8nsli deluxe. much as i like sli, i am going to upgrade my gfx soon and am keen to get away from the money pit that is sli. would an x1900xtx work well on this board and would it be a worthwhile upgrade from my present setup. my game of choice at the mo is BF2.
oh and i play at 1280x1024 on a 19" lcd.

I would wait for Cebit to see what NV is launching and then decide what to get.

i dont want to start playing the waiting game, if we all did that no one would ever buy anything. i just want to know if it would be worth putting the x1900xtx on an sli board.

March 9th Cebit, as mentioned by a previous poster. Wait till then and decide. ;)

It's hardly a waiting game when it's just two weeks away.

i woudl say prolly not worth the upgrade right now.
the money you woudl spend compared to the performance received shouldn't warrant it.
not at the resolution you play at.
I am pretty sure that was your question

but if you are dead set on an upgrade and gotta do it today and single card is all you want then yes it will do what you ask of it.

I would say go for that or the X1900XT, most of them have the same memory on them. I highly recommend the upgrade, the 1900 will perform better then what you have now. You will be able ot play anything out on the market at 1280x1024 with your settings maxed out.

I see no reason to wait. ATI has some great cards for a great price out right now. Check out the hot deals section for some cheap prices on these cards.

i would need a fair leap in performance for the upgrade and i was hopeing that i could do that with a single card as upgrading sli is an expensive business. if the x1900xtx cant do it, what is the 7900 expected to deliver.

i think we were typing at the same time cooter. my cards were great for games that were designed for them, they just seem to be lacking a bit in the latest games. do you reckon i will see a substantial improvement with the xtx.

There are no problems putting ATI cards on an nForce4 SLI board.
It seems that most people with high end ATI cards run them on nForce boards.

Also of note, if you are only gaming at 1280x1024 a XTX would be overkill.

You would do just fine with a lesser expensive 7800GTX or 1900XT. Maybe even a 7800GT or 1800XT.

thx PRIME1, you are probably right but when i upgrade i put as much overkill in as i can afford, i reckon you get a bit more use out of the gear that way.

Two weeks for the announcement but how long till your favorite eTailer gets them in stock and ready to ship?

If you believe whats been said (at non-Inq sites) then this is going to be another hard launch too. I'm just saying I would wait the two weeks to see if NV offers anything competive to ATI's X1900 series before I decide to put down all that cash especially considering that NVs cards can supposedly hold their own against ATI's while costing less.

It's two freakn' weeks and he already has SLIed 6800GTs, what does he lose in waiting two weeks? Hell, if anything the cost of whatever card he wants could go down alittle more.

if it was to be a hard launch, i could wait to see what the 7900 has to offer. i assume this is what you guys are reffering to.

Why on earth are you upgrading? Do you have a 3007fpw?

EDIT: Also, BF2 likes ATI cards better than Nvida cards.

Well, I wouldnt call it the waiting game. Even if so, its not big deal. I'd like to see what both companies will have on the table before deciding. If rumors about a refresh from ATI comes about after the 7900s, then that's where I'll consider it ridiculous. Until then I assume that the cards after the 7900s will be next-gen; the "next round".

Its different when in about 2 week a brand new high end card it coming out...

If it was 3 months away it would not be worth the wait.

I really don't see a reason to upgrade your SLI'd cards--what can't they handle? If anything, get a new processor, sound card, memory. Or buy a second LCD:)

Also, not to sound like a jerk, but aren't ALL video cards money pits? Your 6800GT SLIs probably cost as much or less than one 1900XT. It sucks to buy a great card only to have it last 6 months to a year before it is outdated.

Yes that sucks, but it only gets outdated if you can't play newer games on it, me for example am going to build a new pc sometime in march, probably will put a 7900GTX in it or maby a X1900XT, all that I really want is something that will play Counter-Strike and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion with max detail, since Oblivion hasn't even gone gold yet it would probably be foolish to upgrade for it.
