Hi again,
Let's just cut right to the chase. I have a WinXP, P4 2.8C, Abit IS7 rig, and i'm using an MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 mouse. Just today, I was playing some Call of duty, and I was getting these weird 3-4 second pauses where i couldn't use the mouse. Sometimes they would occur with the windows bells indicating hardware removed/hardware added. sometime no sound. It kept happening, and got really annoying so i quit. I tried out some stuff in windows, no problems. Fired up the UT2004 demo, and whaddaya know, more mouse issues. I noticed, during the game, that when i couldn't use the mouse, the red laser light would be off. I hit ALT+F4 right when it clicked off next, and I couldn't use the mouse in windows, and i got a little message saying "one of your USB peripherals has stopped responding or has malfunctioned" (or something to that extent)

I unplugged the mouse, put it into another USB Port, and that seemed to be working for a few minutes. Then again, only in games, I'm getting 3-4 second lags where the mouse shuts off.

I powered off and then on, but still, no luck. thought it might be a power issue, so i unplugged my firewire HD, but no luck.

any ideas?
 
I went through three of those mouses. I had your same exact problem for the past year or so. Mouse ALWAYS kept constantly losing power. I had to keep unplugging the mouse from the USB and plug it back in. I tried several different USB ports and PS/2 did the same thing. Happened *ALOT* during games and occasionally during normal Windows. I experienced 3-4 second lag before it shut off.

The result? It's the mouse. Like I said above I went through three of the same mouses and always the same thing.

The answer? Get a new, non-microsoft mouse. I got my Logitech MX500 for $39.95 and I'm never going back to microsoft. So much more responsive and comfortable, and plus its an eight button mouse. And a plus: When playing a game it no longer snaps to the ceiling or floor for no reason at all.

hmm... slam your mouse hard in games? I've hear of some people that don't realize they're doing it untill well... their mouse is broken, lol.
 
I had that problem, and after a lot of research, I found that it was because I had a card in the PCI Slot right beneath the AGP slot. I relocated that card, and it has worked fine ever since.

More specifically the MS mouse driver fouls up memory addressing as it relates to USB.


I have that mouse on one of my office machines and it does the same thing. That particular machine is an AMD with an apollo pro chipset.

The via usb issue has alot to do with it. Go logitec and problem solved. Their mice are better anyway.
 
i m 90% sure its the mouse....

i have had a lot of experience with different mouses...many generic ones does ok but i happen to be using this one right now...this cheapo one that came free with this really nice keyboard... and since color matches, (black keyboard w/ black mouse), i decided to use it, also cus my other mouse was being modded....

so this one is optical, and i thought well, better than the original ball mouse i was using on my other computer...WRONG, it sucks

it lags every few seconds and the cursor cant be seen and then suddenly it pops back as if it was working

Most USB mice tend to have short cords, and gamers tend to forget that there is a distance that cord can reach. Although you may not see a problem, usually the solder points in the USB connector can slip right out. I have lost 3 mice this way. Hell, one of them was a wireless MX 700!

Because mice are so delicate, I use logitech. They offer 5 years after the in store warranty. You just tell them it doesnt track, and they send you a new one without even asking for the old one back. As insignificant as it may sound, it feels good knowing you can still use your "almost dead" mouse until you get the new one.

well, it seems to be the mouse. it died completely soon after my first post, and now i'm using my wacom tablet (a pain in the ass)

I ordered my logitech MX 500 (free shipping from newegg) and i hope to have it up and running soon.

ps, i keep all my PCI slots free, actually, so that's not a problem for me. mouse cord wasn't getting yanked, and i have an intel 865PE mobo, so i don't think it was the cord or the USB drivers.

HOW???....you said you lost a mx700 because of a short cord and solder points slip right out... but the only problems that can results from a short cord is when you move it a lot and pulls on the cord.... but how can u pull the usb connector right out when you're using a WIRELESS mx700?
 
microsoft wired mice have this annoying design flaw(actualy its done like that on purpose because most people will just go out and buy another one) in which there is no strain relief on the mouse wire where it enters the mouse. then the wire does a tight 90 degree bend. this causes the metal wires to eventually fatigue.

fortunately you can scan or take a picture of the bottom of the mouse with serial number and send it to them (after calling or going to the web site and reporting problem) and they send you a new one FREE and FREE shipping!

they do not even want the old one and you can fix it.
i have 4 mice in a row this way ever since the first intellimouse optical, and now they sent me explorer3. I hope it breaks soon so i can get the new one they just came out with:)

hint: when you fix it use a bit of shrink wrap as a STRAIN RELIEF!

Just because it says wireless, doesnt mean completely wireless. I am an upgrader. I mean serious upgrader. New Desks all the time. It can stretch depending on computer location. It is just a warning.

They also said that corelle was unbreakable, and titanic was unsinkable. Look at it now. the base isnt glued to the desk, it can move. I moved it too much, it got caught behind the DB-15 cord on the back, and snap!
 
i'm just about to recieve my mx500 from newegg... i don't really care about my ms mouse that much. I'd rather have something that's better designed anyway.
 
i got this same problem, but on PS2 optical mouse...

i found that it plugs in "too" easily... so i just use a small pincher to bent the PS2 on the mouse a bit... now it's ok
 
We had a similar prob in our school network related to a virus, you might check that route....
 
i have to say, i'm relatively unimpressed with the MX500. It is comfy, sure, but first of all the stock drivers don't have a "Mouse3" function, just logitech's "autoscroll" which causes problems in firefox. i got some hacked drivers, but the mouse also just jitters in place a lot of the time. it seems to have a hard time standing still, something i never had problems with using my ms explorer 3.

i don't like ms on principle, but their mouse is simply better. and now there's a 4.0 out.

MX500 jitters in place?? IMO you should replace it. My MX700 is always precice and the only time it would jitter or become unresponsive is when I had the receiver right next to my monitor. I didn't even install the drivers, since it wouldn't work with a game I used to play, and every button works except the one that switches between windows (which I never use anyway).

And can you really get a free replacement if you tell logitech that it becomes unresponsive? 5 Year warranty too? that is so long lol
 
well, i do keep the mouse relatively close to the monitor, but i am working on a tiny little desk and that isn't really my decision. my ms mouse never jittered.

I'll move it away and see if that helps.

Well I don't think it should have a problem being close to the monitor since it is a MX500 and has a cord, but the cordless one should be like 1-2 feet away from electronics.

Maybe you should try calling logitech, and try to get a replacement.
 
I've been using my IntelliMouse for about 3 years and the only thing I've noticed is a little bit of response lag, other than that, it works fine!
 
yeah, maybe i'll call logitech. maybe i'll convince them to let me upgrade to that fancy blue one for free :)
