Yeah, but it's a pretty cool dock and is compatible with Surface Pro 3,4 and Pro (?), the Surface Book and now Surface Laptop. Docking solutions that work with that span of devices for that long and even backwards compatible before USB-C was even a thing, that's not all bad.

Yes because the world uses surface books, everyone should be supporting USB-C and its open standards. Its funny that Apple are the ones pushung it the most yet cop the most flak for being closed off and proprietary...

But in the case of USB-C for docking that's really a Thunderbolt issue and that's very much in flux. How many people have USB-C Thunderbolt docks lying around? If USB-C and Thunderbolt were well established norms then sure, but they aren't.

They already have but the telemetry spyware, forced updates, and ugly looking interface forced most doctors to skip it and try something else. :(
 
I like having USB A and their magnetic port, but they have plenty of space to add a simple USB C port (even keeping the display port out) capable of growing the device into the future years. I have a decent portable battery bank that could dump a fair amount of power back into it for camping or other trips which would be great. I would rather carry a USB C to DP or HDMI and ditch the HDMI port for it. More function that makes sense out of one port (earphone port is fine and doubles as an external mic in, love using my cell phone earphones as a mic and earphones).

Why hate on folks with reasonable requests for a new standard? If I'm going portable I would rather not carry 50 adapters around for various connectivity options. Sure I could haul my car battery re-charger around and plug the normal power cable in for extra juice but at that point, id just buy a laptop with dual batteries or more juice in the first place.

I'm still using my Gen 1 Surface Pro bought at launch, it still works well enough (track pad sucks but it always did) for my needs. As I have no dire need to upgrade yet I can afford to keep waiting for MS to get on the bandwagon since they dont want to lead the pack. The Surface line was all about pushing new boundaries, innovation and creating new markets for amazing devices allowing content creation and manipulation. So it seems odd they would shut the door on a new standard more and more devices are adopting. As I still have my Surface 1 and use it for a lot of things (even talking to my cars computer) I would not be buying a new one that I did not plan to use for another 5 to 6 years.

There is no future proofing, but there is at least being ready for the now.
