THIS is ridiculous..

Why cant computer hardware be more like consoles..I mean look at the xbox..not even coded using dx9., at 3 year old still plays doom3 SMOOTHLY. WTF?
If everyone used the same hardware and kept everything at spec then it would be possible for software developers to get some amazing games out that would run fine on everyones machine. ;)

Seriously, if you want longevity, get a nextgen console when they come out and it will last you 4+ years. If you want the best graphics stick to the PC and deal with having to constantly upgrade. My friends who play console games are always amazed when they see Doom3 and Farcry on my machine. They are even more amazed, however, when I tell them how much it cost me to get them to run like that :)

I think it is poor cooding in games then anything else.

Greg

Exactly. Here we are with video cards, cpus, and memory subsystems 10 or 20 times faster than the consoles have but our games only look 1.5x better.

I disagree, or at least partially. I've seen loads of XBox games, including the "Doom 3 beating" Chronicles of Riddick and even the best are starting to show their age badly. I find myself seeing the blocky graphics (does anyone know the standard resolution for XBox games is? It looks like 800x600 max), slowdown and jerkiness.

I think you have to take into account the law of diminishing returns - if you increase the resolution a couple of times, it might take (e.g.) twice as much grunt to move the screen around, but it only looks 20% better. If you put Doom3 at 1600x1200 next to XBox Riddick, it looks a world apart.

Having said that, I've got nothing against consoles and am looking forward to seeing what the next gen do. I have no doubt they will be doing things that will make my 6800Ultra jealous...

My Ti 200 will still serve as a backup in the event my 6800GT or 9700 Pro go down. Thats it IMO ;)

Console games are designed to be played at 640x480 or less.

Your Ti4600 will last even longer if you can deal with that kind of resolution.

Here's my $0.02.

FX5600 w/ 256MB RAM, day it came out, $160, now $140, same card, year and a half later. Still gives good graphics, and overclocks well. Don't need to spend $400-$600 on new graphics cards, just wait for the budget cards to come out.

Grant it, they don't have THE BEST graphics, but it is damn close.

As for Consoles, I still play the 8-bit Nintendo. 8-bit RULES.

I was using a ti4200 until last week when i caved and bought a 6800OC. Even now, a ti4200 (i bought it AGGGGGEESSSS ago for only 130$) can run every single game on the market right now at REASONABLE framerates. In the end, it was CS:Source that made me upgrade... other games i can handle fps around 30, but for CS (highly competetive twitch game) i wanted the 50-70's. My ti4200 plays far-cry at relatively decent detail settings (mainly, turn off detail textures) at 800x600 and that's all i would ever expect from a card that is YEARS old...

I have a computer (2.4c, 1gig pc2100 DDR, and visinotek ti4600 128)

it plays any game thats out

I have a firend with a 2.0c, 512 RDRAM, and a ti4600 128 -> he can play any game tahts out (far cry ,doom 3, cs:source etc)

the ti4600 and the 9800 pro are the 2 best card for your moeny if you bought them. The 4600 is just getting outdated enough to require an upgrade, but the 9800 pro is still plenty good.

Some of you guys are rediculous how you think u must play games at 1600x1200 with 6xAA and 12xAF or I cant enjoy the game.

my roomate has one of those new Dell 21" LCDs that everyone likes (its very nice) and i think playing games at 1024x768 on that monitor looks fine...

I have a Samsung 19inch LCD and I play cs:source at 800x600 and it looks just fine.

2xaa is plenty in most games ive played. no AA can be annoying ill admit.

Just reacting to the first post.

Dude, i had a ti4200 and i played farcry at 1024x768 with graphics at max. Screw the FX cards all you want. Just leave the GF4Ti alone :p

Ok, i'll read the rest of the thread now :)

EDIT: Wow, guess i'm not the only one

Ah...The GF4Ti...what a great card..Only retired mine for a 6800GT, and it was a grood upgrade, but i could still play any game out there with it at medium res/medium iq and have lots of fun. All I want is that my new GT lasts as long as the little ti did...

Considering it's a P3 733, 64MB SDRam, NV2X graphics, they are pretty amazing graphics. You can't even load the PC version on a PC like that.
