video cards nowadays are ridiculous..a year...maybe 2 years ago my 9800pro was selling for $599 dollars..When i bought it after it was out for awhile..i still paid 289 for it..now if you look at a benchmark of all the "current" dx9 cards its like 3rd-4th from the bottom out of like 15 cards...ati and nvidia are smart companys no doubt..but they are bleeding people dry by forcing them to buy a 600 dollar card every 2 years just to be able to play games..fuckin bullshit if you ask me.

I remember when the ti4600 FIRST came out..people were like "omg this card will last years"..6 months later it was outdated and slow as snails...and no companys buy their stuff back after you upgrade to their newer products..i think ati and nvidia should BUY back their old cards if they are gunna rape people like this.. =/

a TI 4600 can play farcry at 1280x1024 with high settings with decent frames, its still a good card...

my 9800 Pro can barely do that...

dude im not serious...come on..i said it as a "what if" scenario...it would be cool..but wont happen..ever...and even if they did..i didnt mean at full price obviously...like 1/4th the price or some shit..i dunno..cant tell me you wouldnt mind ati buying back your 9800pro for like 100 bucks and putting it towards the purchase of a newer card?

that is fuckin awesome!!! too bad its those cards and not their xt line...heh. they also need to extend the line of cards you can select from...

Welcome to Computers! it's always been like this, and prolly will stay like this....

You couldn't possibly blame it on ATI or Nvidia for needing their cards to play new games . . . the developers of these games are constantly pushing the limit of current hardware and creating new features that require better and faster cards.

Saphire cards don't count. ONLY Ati cards. Not any of their partners.

Sorry, it seems they do, now. When I tried it several months back they did not like my totally unmodified saphire card.

Yep, thats around what I paid for mine. I actually paid a bit more cause I got it before release on Ebay. I still regret paying so much, but its been a great card the past 1.5 years. The price of high end hardware has NOT increased at all over the years, and some parts have even decreased in price.

QFT - I sold my 9800XT and used a Geforce Ti4200 until the newer cards came out. If you run FarCry in OpenGL it will move right along (NO AA , AF on high ) I could even run it @ 1600X1200 pretty smoothly if I turned the water detail all the way down :D

I played all the way through doom3 on my ti4600... its f***in metal.....

then i got a BFG 6800 OC, but i keep my ti4600 in a see through box in the corner as a memento... i look at it a lot...

Dude? Are you serious? It's not the fucking video card companies fault. The game industry is always trying to dazzel and amaze us with better graphics. More immersive gameplay and more visual effects. Guess what??!?! If you want to play the newer games, you have to buy a newer card every couple years to play them at the highest settings and detail levels. That's just how it works. Software improves and gets more complicated, graphic detail increases and the number of polygons goes up. That means that you've got to buy a more expensive video card.

They are producing newer cards to get your money. In turn the software companies produce better graphics in games to collect your hard earned money. You know what? It's called business. If you are happy with pong, then stick with a 512K ISA VGA card. If you want to play the latest and greatest games the way they were meant to be played then bite the bullet that the rest of us do.

The graphics card companies are constantly trying to improve technology to do two things. Give us more realistic graphics and more complex games, and secondly to get your money. That's what it's all about. Sometimes the hardware industry is way ahead of the software industry. But not in terms of graphics. Not until our desktops can easily produce the kind of visual's ILM has made famous in big budget films.

So until the graphics cards can do that, software companies (Game makers) can always take advantage of anything our computers can do. So in turn the card makers will continue to advance.

Think about it. Until Farcry and Doom III came out, all we had were new games based on the same Quake III graphics. After awhile we weren't seeing anything but the same thing over and over again. Since it had been awhile since anything new and revolutionary was brought to us in the market, the gaming industry was stagnant.

With newer more powerfull game engines new things can be done in terms of physics detail and gameplay. I for one got sick of every new game for over 2 years looking like Quake III.

This is about technology moving forward and companies trying to make a buck. I'm glad the industry advances enough to make me want to spend my money on new graphics cards. It gives me new stuff to do and play with.

It's not anymore of an evil plot than processor manufacturers or car makers use on us everyday.

Buying back the card for anything other than recycling purposes is ludicrous. It's your choice to play top dollar. I enjoy gaming at 1600x1200 at 60FPS+ and I think it's worth the premium to do so. No one forces you to do it. You've got free will.

I'm sorry I went off like that but jesus man, but your post got me going. This industry has been like this and probably always will be. You just have to accept that this is how it works. Either do it or don't. No one says you can't buy mid range and turn down the detail.

Ok I'm done now. /END RANT

OMG I bought a 2004 Honda Accord this past December and pretty soon they are introducing 2005 models, this is an outrage! I demand that Honda pay me back 95% of the cars value so I can upgrade to a 2005 model.

They don't force anybody. If you are rich enough or foolish enough or care enough about bragging rights and being the "first" to have some thing that you would pay $600+ for something that will cost half that much in a couple months, then more power to you. But nobody is forcing you. I personally don't care. When the price is reasonable I will buy, until then I either play with lower settings or (better yet) wait and buy when the card and the game are cheaper.
My wife and kids bleed me dry :D not ATI or Nvidia.

Here is a minor contribution. Now I've got an older system and what I have does 80% of what I need.

Several years ago, a friend of mine upgraded from a GF2-MX to a GF2-GTS, what did he do with the MX? He sold it to ME :D . Now you may not always have a friend, co-worker, whatever ready / willing to buy your old stuff, but it is something to consider.

PS I paid $90 for that card, At the time it was going for $120+ new online

Well, I just played Doom3 in 1024x768 at 25 FPS with a P4 northwood with rambus and a 400MHZ FSB. I'd say thats pretty good for a 3 year old card and system. Plus, I can play Far Cry on it at 1024x768 with most settings maxed.

9700 pro here. I recently bought one, but I did have one two years ago when they first came out. It's amazing that this thing still runs every game I throw at it, even with aa and af. I have mine overclocked to the equivelent, or slightly better, than a 9800 pro. Doom 3, Call of Duty, Painkiller, and even Far Cry, play great.

I know someone who plays Doom 3 on an 8500 LE and loves it. Now tell me why YOU need to spend 600 bucks on a video card.

things just dont look as good at anything lower than 1280x1024 for me (its my LCD's native)

LCD? Whats that? Buying missile subs for Taiwan are we? In a year I'll be able to buy your monitor for half what you paid for it.

Not bad. Not bad at all for that card. And I am aloud to laugh cause I owned a Ti200 back in the day. ;)

Well I'm getting a 6800NU tomorrow regardless, since that 1024x768 is with the low graphics quality (but high special effects, mind you)

Also, my ti200 has just a heatsink, and an over clock to 190/430 (from 175/400) gave me an extra 1.7 FPS in doom 3. Wow.

I run Doom3 on a P4A 2.4Ghz 400MHz FSB I850 Mobo(RDRAM) on a 6800GT at 1024x768 8xAA High Q(8xAF) settings set in game(application controlled) at 49.5 FPS :)

Terra...

I remember paying $400 for my GF3 the day it came out. How many DX8 games were out then? It was at least a year before most games were DX8.

I've upgraded so many PCs that I still have my Matrox G400Max. How many games came out with bump mapping?

I preferred OpenGL on my Voodoo 3000 card over any DX card. Remember Unreal? The G400Max and GF3 were nowhere as pretty as the Voodoo card. Such is life.

Now-a-days I try to pay the same amopunt for my vidcard as I do my CPU. I think the "sweet spot" for Joe Average is about $150.

Who knows?, perhaps a year from now all these latest cards will be slow.

Why aren't you more indignant that most games now come out for consoles? Have you looked at the size of the PC game rack at Electronic Boutique?

Personnally I would have trouble spending $400 on a video card, but since I got my 6800GT for $200 and back in the days my Geforce3 for $200. I cant complain...

Why cant computer hardware be more like consoles..I mean look at the xbox..not even coded using dx9., at 3 year old still plays doom3 SMOOTHLY. WTF?
