this image cannot be displayed - word 2013 and powerpoint 2013

pretty simple, go to insert picture choose a JPG whether local or on network and it inserts a box with a small red X saying "this image cannot be displayed".

i have restarted the computer, reinstalled office 2013 ... no idea why this is happening. tried some fixes i found by googling, nothing

Still getting familiar with v2013 myself. Don't know but the first place I'd check would be the security settings.

Do other images work ok, or do you get this error with every JPG?

PNG seems to work every time

Edit... Most of the time. Inconsistent. if right click and do preview the image will not show.

ok odd. if i open the picture in paint and resave it as a JPEG it opens just fine and shows up in powerpoint and word.

Not familiar with local issue. I've ever get "broken image" icon in IE browser with the Red "X". And if I download the JPG image and view it with image viewer, then shows well. If your issue is similar, here's the solution: this is might because the image color mode is in CMYK, so you may just change mode to RGB, and then it will goes well.
