This fan seems awfully fast

My new 3800X2 build is humming nicely at 2800 with 1.5v. I'm using a stock heatpipe AMD cooler I got from someone here. It's a 4 pipe variety, not 8 pipe like my opteron cooler. It does the job pretty good with temps running 39-45 in warm rooms.

Speedfan shows Fan 1, presumably the CPU fan, running at 5819. That's twice as fast as my opteron cpu fan. I tried slowing it down, but it doesn't respond.

It's certainly cooling well enough, but is a bit loud sometimes. Not obnoxious, but it's sure barrelin' along at almost 6K. Is that within normal range for a stock CPU fan?

You sure that's not your NB fan?

Try stopping it with your finger... Does the value change?

Given the possibility that it could indeed be his HSF fan... I wouldn't recommend touching it with your finger :p... I'm going to guess that the reading is off though, that's pretty damned fast for a fan..

Well it sometimes sounds like something is blowing like mad in there. Since the CPU fan is the only one with a 3 pin connector, I'm presuming that's the one. I can unplug the case fans and see what happens. Yeah, I'm not gonna try stopping it with my finger. I just checked it in Sandra and got the 6027rpm. Of course, Sandra also tells me my vcore is 2.58, so I don't take that too seriously. This isn't a problem as long as it doesn't blow up...

Hahah 2.58V you would have a small explosive rather than a CPU.

Awe cmon. Suck it up! I've stopped the 80mm delta fans in my G5 with my bare finger! (Those fuckers are sharp even when they're off). That's with the side panel off too ladies, while the cooling system is in "oh shit, go fast" mode. :).

I started Speedfan right upon boot today. The fan speed starts out at about 2800 rpm. I have Automatic Fan Speed checked. It starts climbing immediately, reaching 6000rpm within 10 minutes. I can't believe that's accurate. OTOH, I'm running perfectly stable on the 3800X2 at 2850 with 1.55v, with temps ranging from 38 idle to 45 under load, so I'm not complaining. My opteron 170 OTOH shows a constant 2750 rpm fan speed. It has a different AMD heatpipe cooler and CPU temps are a bit cooler than the 3800, at the same vcore, but running at 2.5ghz.

Actually when I use Speedfan my Temp3 says -128C also. I thought it was just mine. :p Parently not!

Try stopping a 90mm Tornado with your finger... doubt you could pick your nose much with that hand anymore...
