This a good PSU?

It's a decent unit as long as you aren't pushing its limits. SHould be adequate, and look pretty decent. I think that's an FSP Epsilon-based unit, but I'm sure someone will correct me soon if I'm wrong.

It is alright, but you may as well just spend the extra $5 to get the Corsair VX450.

sounds like overkill to me

or

would be fine too

for a little more

would be nice, i have one, it runs SLI and all no problem, if he is willing to wait it seems they put the 500W model on sale for $50 or so once a week for a couple days off and on

if i am not mistaken it is pretty much the same as a Corsair VX450 internally

Huh, looks like you already ordered the PC with that PSU. So no need for help?

No, actually we got the PSU but it was DOA, unfortunately we threw away the box so they wouldn't take it back. I'm just curious if that was a bad one to start off with or not, and if one would be better?

PSU is fine. You can try RMA it through newegg. I have RMA things without the original boxes.

Newegg will send you a new PSU with the box and all as the replacement and you can either use it or sell it off and buy a new PSU.

As Kil4Thril has said, it is based on FSP Epsilon which is known for having out of spec ripple at high loads.. But the ripple problem of the Epsilon PSUs usually start occurring above 500W so that StealthXStream 500W PSU should have been just fine. So you may have been just unlucky in getting a DOA. Set up an RMA with OCZ and see if they'll send you a working PSU.

But if the RMA doesn't pan out, the Corsair 450VX PSU listed above is a very solid choice. Since that build has the 8800GTS 512MB, the EA380 would not be a good choice since it only has 27A on the +12V rail whereas a system with the GTS 512MB requires at least 26A on the +12V rail. Best err on the side of caution.

And yes the EA500 is pretty much the same as the Corsair 450VX but can be seen on sale for $50 often times. However, do note that Antec has switched manufacturers of the EA500 from Seasonic to Delta. So I'm a bit hesitant to recommend the EA500 since A) I am unsure whether or not online stores will denote the different model numbers between the two PSUs (EA500 is Seasonic built, EA500D is Delta built) and B) not too sure how good Delta made PSUs are.

i would not be hesistant, i have the 500"D" model and had it running a much higher power demanding rig in my sig with no problems whatsoever

4200+ X2 (89W) @ 2.53Ghz is a good 125W or close last time i checked
SLI G80 8800GTS's
etc..etc...

the system he spec'd out is quite a bit less demanding on a power supply than this old beast

You know what you should do. Call the RMA tell them you have everything, and ask for a Refund not a replacement. Then buy a new PSU, and when you receive it, replace eerything you had missing. Box, booklet, etc. then send it out !
